taking a color vote

How many of you agree with the saying - Red goes with anything! For instance, quilting a jigsaw puzzle quilt in Big Stitch style, with red perle cotton. Let the voting begin!

Me! waving hand frantically. Kathy A suggested I try it. I really didn't see how it could possibly work. Always willing to consider the thoughts of the experts, I bought some red and got with it. It's wonderful, it's perfect and it somehow is a very special basic. Ah. Now I remember. Red was what Kathy suggested for the bright floral quilt I made for our granddaughter. It was just perfect. Since then, I've been hooked and keep a comfortable supply of red ready to join in. Polly

well now, Ms Karen, i know that Green goes with anything. it surely goes with black and white and all the other colours one might think of are like flowers in the garden with all the greens that exist in mother nature. i also love reds and the big stitch has such marvelous possiblitys. works for me. tho how that perle cotton (what size) will get thru the layers without distorting i wonder. tho to be fair i've never used it to quilt with so it could well work. i also wonder if the red has any bleeding issues?

sorry to be so vague but then i'm no expert on much of anything so when i speak it is only from either personal experience or just me surmising 'what if', hoping to generate a bit of a discussion thereby hoping whatever the issue is can be given more thought and perhaps reach a more definitive explanation. so anyone who 'really knows me well' (few and far between) would take whatever i might say on any subject with a grain of salt. those who 'dont really know me well' (seems to be more of those around) are left to their own devices. clear as mud, eh. sorry. i got up too early every day this week and i'm still not sure where i am. hugz, jeanne

Agree? No? >g< I find 'red' terribly difficult to work with, in any guise; but that is just me I'm sure. If you only wanted 'yes' replies, Karen - sorry! . In message , "Karen, Queen of Squishies" writes

Doesn't Freddy Moran consider red a neutral? Works for me, just make sure it's colour fast.

When Miz Sairey was posting on here, she would always advise a narrow red strip inside of borders. I have done that for years now, and call it my Sairey Strip. Sometimes the red is a bit darkers, and usually it has a pattern of some kind to it, so it doesn't read as solid.

I thoroughly agree! When I do blanket stitch by hand on my applique pieces, I use red a lot. It really gives my pieces that extra "oomph".... I love it.

I think any strong color is a good way to pull together diverse blocks. So red works. Right now I'm putting together a friendship quilt, every block contains a bit of red. Some of them much more than a bit :-) And I'm quilting a very scrappy bowtie with variegated citrus yellow-green-turquiose thread. That works too. Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap

No, red doesn't go with everything. No one shade of one color will go with all shades of all colors. But that's not my worry. I'd worry that the red pearl cotton will bleed. Test for color fast first, then lay it across the quilt to see if it will work. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Not my personal cup of tea....since red usually screams for my attention on anything (assuming one means a "true" red -- like from a box of crayons -- and not a maroon or brick like variant) .... but to each her own, enjoy!

Back a hundred years ago when I was a teenager, we were told that you couldn't wear blue and green together. Now, how dumb was that? I love blue and green together. Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that all that green grass, green trees and green leaves and blue sky didn't go together!!!

*Every* color goes with every other color. I cannot think of any two- or more- colors that do not "go together". BUT..... it's all in how you use it! Imagine a gorgous quilt in all lovely, soft, delicate pastels with an 8 inch border of solid Christmas red fabric. That would be horrible! But.... if you carefuly used a bit of a soft raspberry red here and there throughout the pastels, then the red would be lovely. (Although the thought of *any* border that's 8 in. wide in a solid fabric makes me shudder! LOL) If you made a purple and green quilt with a burgundy inner border and some burgundy accents it could be glorious. Cobalt blue and brilliant orange could be lovely with the right shade of red carefully and judiciously placed within the blue and orange fabrics. Every color is very much dependant on the shade used, how it is used, how much of it is used and where it is used to make the colors "go together".

I think every color is ours for the using and we are responsible for how we use it to make it "work" with all the other colors. So there! :-P~~~~~

Oh yes - What you said!

Everything goes with everything - depending on context!

I wear colour combinations I would not use in a quilt, and I certainly would not paint my house in the colours I use in quilts. When teaching beginners to choose the fabrics for their first quilt, the biggest hurdle is convincing them not to choose all light to med shades that "match". I discourage my beginners from choosing any fabrics until they have sewn practise blocks and made mini quilts for a couple of weeks. That means they get the basics without risking "good" fabrics and they have a chance to experiment with colour.

Most choose something like red/white/blue or light/dark of one colour for a first block. But within a couple of blocks ("because this is just practise") they are sewing navy and burnt orange and bright yellow together and deciding that it looks good.

I am the first to admit I am not colour confident - but I DO love experimenting lol. I had not heard of quilting in red to add zing but I am willing to give it a try!

Getting ready to do over my living/dining room in burnt red and sage green with touches of something they call "cloves". What can I say, all that red fabric lying around gave people in the household ideas, LOL>

Thanks Leslie That is a really great exposition of colour theory - not 'official', perhaps, but so correct - and reassuring to me (I was going to say folks like me, but I guess there aren't any others >gg*Every* color goes with every other color. I cannot think of any two-

Yes Patti, I agree - you are unique! Absolutely one of a kind!!

And remember what Mary Elen Hopkins always proclaimed - if you make a quilt with a whole lot of reds they will play well together if you add just a bit of purple.
