talking quilts

Hi, Patti, and yes, they're kinda like the cards you can buy and open them up and they talk....but this kind you push a button (my aunts quilt has a cute pink flower button and I'm looking for a perfect button for my adopted dad).

I print out their pictures on the whitest fabric I can have (no tone on tone...just does not work....makes the picture come out molted) Then I put a small border around the picture and then a larger border. For the last border, I try to use something that matching the person personality/job/favorite hobby etc.

I quilt the wall quilt like normal but when I put on the label on the back, I only sew down three sides. I leave the top side open to slip in the little tape recording. I sew the button on the front of the quilt so that it matches the inside recording button. The two I have made just make me happy inside as I love these two people so much. I do use a hanging sleeve and just the little wooden dowels and then glue/nail on matching finials.

They're are lot's of ways to use this: graduate picture and their famous last words before heading out into the real word; picture of ones child or grandchild and then recording their giggle or "i wuv gamma". One could even use this with their pets and get a recording of them barking or whatever :) Parents getting old? Get a picture of them together and put in two recordings. These talking quilts I have made have brought me tears and smiles.

And they're a fast project to make and so much fun.

Piggy-backing here, so I hope you read this, Donna. I really like this idea, and would like to do something like it. But help me out with the recording - what do you use to make it? I guess I don't get out much! When I think "tape recording," I think the little bitty reel-to-reel type tapes that my bosses used to use to dictate letters! I don't think that'd work at the push of a button.

Hi, Louise

The little recorders are kinda like the ones you find in those gift cards that you open up and hear a message. The ones I found on the web are larger then those but still fit fine in the label on the back of ones quilt.

They can be found at

and they're called Talking Module, Item # FM-W-VO. I think they are even on sale right now. At first all I could find when I decided that I wanted a true "talking quilt" I had to buy at least 1000 of them! Future Memories sell by unit so I was able to buy the 5 that I wanted.

How they work is that there is a little hole in the little recorder box that you push down with a pin. A red light comes on and that's when you get whomever to talk into the recorder. That's the hardest part, having your loved ones decided on what they want to say! :) But if you don't like the recording, you can record over and over until you have the one you want to keep. Put the recorder inside the label and then sew a button on the front of your quilt that will lie right on top of the push button inside. You made have to do a little rangling to get the placing just right but it's not hard work. Then just push that special button on the quilt and it talks! Fun

Just wish I would have thought of this when my grandchildren were little! My youngest grandson, then just 2 years old, well, his first true sentence was "I luv you" to me! I can still see him saying that with this big ole smile on his face.

Thanks! I've bookmarked the page, and hopefully will be able to find it when I'm ready to make a project using it.
