We have a history of getting terrible gifts from at least one family member, but not this year. In fact, all gifts were tasteful and appropriate (well, there are the wineglasses engraved with the name of the New York winery that sells this horrendously sweet wine called Red Cat that his family adores, but given the way we break glasses during the summer, these will be perfect for patio use). Not too much that was quilty for me, though. MSM gave me a hand quilting hoop, which I've been wanting for a while (haven't open the box to look at it yet) and even better, some money toward a new embroidery machine. David put some needle threaders in my stocking. And that's about it. The other gifts ran to clothes and books. But I do have my EQ6 upgrade downstairs waiting to be installed and played with. (Maybe today!)
We drove up to the Chicago 'burbs Saturday afternoon and stayed at the Hyatt in Lisle so we wouldn't have to drive all the way into Evanston in order to turn around and drive back to Lisle the next day (Xmas Eve) to go to my brothers. They had a pool, so Saturday before dinner we decided to have a short swim. BAD MISTAKE. The pool deck was unimaginably slippery. And I did slip, falling flat on my face. That night I had a bad headache and the whole left side of my face hurt. (however, the Brandy Alexander I had for dessert took the edge of nicely). Xmas Eve I woke up in pain, but get this, no bruise. I thought I came out pretty good.
Xmas Day we were mostly on our own in Evanston, so opened our stockings and hung out in our jammies until about noon when we had to get dressed. Some friends had invited us for Xmas dinner at their house. It was only at that point that I looked in the mirror. (Mistake or not? I haven't decided) and saw a very nicely developing shiner around my left eye. I feared it was going to spread, but on the 26th when we went to visit David's family and open gifts, nothing more was there. So I thought that would be the end of it.
Yesterday morning, I looked in the mirror again. Now my left check is nicely bruising. I haven't looked in the mirror yet this morning, but the pattern seems to be that something new shows up every two days.
By Friday when I meet my quilting buddies for lunch, I should be quite the sight. I've decided not to even try and cover it up with makeup. I don't think it would work, and it still really hurts to touch my face.
