I've recently started using blue painters tape to mark straight machine-quilting lines when there isn't a seam to follow.

I've been using that technique for quite a while now. Both when machine quilting and hand quilting - nothing is better for straight lines!
I can do straight lines, I have trouble with the curves!

My hands cramp when I try curves at the quilting frame - they are much easier when I'm quilting off frame.
I just saw a quilt last night at the guild show & tell that had curved lines, but not very curved. Just curved enough so you knew they weren't trying to be straight. This was on a "hurry up & get it done" quilt, and was quite effective.
