What is this old quilt block called?

Question

I have a box of very old string quilt blocks that are pieced on newspapers dated in the early 1900's. Each block is made of 8 triangles sewn together to create an octagon. Does anyone know what this pattern is called or history of this pattern block?

Looks like if you add corners to square it off -- it's called a Kaleidoscope Block

Then they could display thefront and back which is pieced to newspaper.  I was able to date theblocks with the newspaper articles.  Each triangle is 4-6 "strings" and Ithink many are sack cloth.  It is all hand sewn and I would like to handsew the remaining blocks to make a quilt.  In any case, I am justastounded at the work and what time it would have taken to make theseblocks.
