What is this old quilt block called?

I have a box of very old string quilt blocks that are pieced on newspapers dated in the early 1900's. Each block is made of 8 triangles sewn together to create an octagon. Does anyone know what this pattern is called or history of this pattern block?

Looks like if you add corners to square it off -- it's called a Kaleidoscope Block

Oh my goodness, what a challenge. Are you going to save them 'as is' or make them into a quilt or what? Polly
