whose quilt is this?

Karen showed me a picture of a quilt that I'm just obsessing about and want to make my own- but she doesn't remember where she got this picture. Is this a quilt that any of you have made/designed etc? If I make it and find that I should've given credit to someone - I Ought to Know! Musicmaker

The block may well have several names. It is in Sally Schneider's book Scrapmania, along with some excellent directions. She calls it Mary's Triangles. (catchy name!)

Theres a slick trick for making this block: cut and sew NO triangles at all...zip, zero, zilch. Think it originates with the incredible Billie Lauder, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if you're interested, I'll fire off a PDF to you with the directions.

I've also seen that block called "Salt and Pepper" and probably a couple of other things too. Basic, traditional block in any case. Go for it, both of you.

Click on "basic blocks library" in the neighbourhood sketch at the top of the page, then select "Triangle gems" in the left-hand column. Note that the A patch in the instructions will be a plain square for the quilt from the photo. Obviously, the photo is NOT a ducks and ducklings block: it's simply triangle gem units rotated: I'm guessing the units end up at 6" or so.

And here is another version of that block, with triangles in the corner instead of a square.

Is there a formula for the shaded 9 patch? I love the look of that!

Ok...answering my own question. This is a 9 patch with half square triangles in the corners, no? I was seeing the blocks as the light or the dark only. Ok I think I get it now.

This is not a 9 patch, althought it could kind of look like one.. It is a Mary's triangle, just like the batik photo that started the whole thing except that the small bloc is a hst rather than a square.

Am I being at all clear?

Check out the PDF..I posted the link earlier. It will give you the formula...although I see that I made the same error when I originally wrote the instructions [what was I thinking] and called it a ":shaded nine patch" instead of a "shaded four-patch." Not to worry: the formula works no matter what you call it!

Proud enuf to give her her first Gold Star---or does she have to practice a bit longer?
