Not a scrapbook

Sorry this story is so long, but if you want to skip it and jump right to what I made, here it is:

Now, the story behind it. I, like others here, also bought the Slab 6 at Michael's this week. Even though I'm not so sure I want to continue with scrapbooking. Whether I do or not, I have always loved paper and paper crafts.

So, remember I was talking about that crappy star punch I bought the other day? Shame on me, I bought another one the same brand, but a little circle one, thinking "Hey, it's a circle. How bad can they screw up a circle?" But, yeah, now I'm really not buying those anymore. It's Provo Craft, a handheld, $1.99 but I get a 50% discount this week for employee appreciation week, so I wasted only 2 dollars on those crappy punches. No more. I got it to work well enough, but I had to punch from both the front and the back of the paper to get it to go all the way through. But, I'm going to have to buy a good one. Any suggestions? I got thumb punches for the flowers, made by All Night Media, and they work great, but I need a handheld for the little circles so I can see to line it up with the cardboard.

Seems like I'm telling this story backwards, but it is chronological. Bought a crappy star punch. Bought paper. Bought crappy little circle punch. Bought good flower punches. Ok, with me?

Next I bought two little 5" x 3" memo notebooks, for 49 cents each. I unbent the spirals at the end, and the spiral wound right out of there, easy peasy. I used the backs only because they're stiff cardboard and the fronts were thin and flimsy. So, I sprayed the cardboard with adhesive, lined them up and stuck them down to my stripey paper, and trimmed off the excess (carefully!) with scissors. Then, I lined up my circle punch with the holes in the cardboard to punch the holes out in the paper too. Then I added the flowers, just to the front cover so I can easily tell which is the front and which is the back when I use it. And put my new front and back all back together with the paper, wound the spiral back in, bent the ends back again, and voila!

Ok, this is totally what I'm going to make for Hannukah presents this year. We have a $5 limit because our family is so big, and I'm going to personalize them by printing the recipient's name in a pretty font on coordinating solids and cutting it out with my fancy scissors. I might even do address books or phone books instead of the plain memo pads. Feel free to steal my idea if you like, it was really fun and easy to make.

Looks great Luna! I wouldn't have gotten the stripes to line up, they'd have been diagonal! LOL That's a really good idea you've got there. I also like the idea of a dollar limit on the gifts. DH has a very large family as well. I'd say you hit on a great idea, be sure you show us what else you do.

Thanks! Lining up, not a problem. I just lined up the cardboard cover to the corner of the paper. Now, cutting off the extra on the other sides, now that was a bit of a problem towards the end of the first cut because my scissor handles got in the way and I had to readjust and it left a little paper hangnail. Which I filed off with a nail file, one of those foam ones, you know? That has the different surfaces for filing, smoothing, and buffing? I used the "smoothing" surface and it smoothed that little sucker right off and left a clean edge.

Yes, I do have an exacto knife, but I'm better with scissors, believe it or not.

I'm glad you like the thumb punches they're so easy to use. My circle punches are CM and I love them. You get two circle punches attached, one smaller one larger, but pricey at $20. I've had mine for 4 years and no problems or needs to sharpen yet. Use it all the time. They also have mini circles, same idea one larger one smaller, hearts, stars, squares and hexagons.

Looking through my other punches it looks like after the thumb punches which overall I would say are the easiest to use and most consistent I have quite a few Emagination and All Night Media. As I said before I've only had serious problems with Provo Craft and that alphabet set from Michaels. Wish I knew who made it but alas I do not.

Love what you did with the notebooks and everyone always needs to update their address books so I'm sure it will be a great hit. Have fun! And Happy Chaunaka in advance...

Great idea Luna. That is a great gift. My daughter has some of that same striped paper and said today it would make a cute bedspread!

It looks great Luna! Looks like you took a bad thing (the punches) and turned them into a great thing. Great idea on setting a spending limit. I've tried to do that with DH so he doesn't spend way too much on me, but he won't go for it. Can't wait to see what else you come up with!
