Spine Filler

I call it "spine filler" ... what is it really called? It is the strip added onto the posts of a post-bound album to take up the extra thickness required because you've put several layers of cardstock/photos/paper/embellishments in your layout. A package of sheet protectors will have a couple of strips included (made of chipboard) but they are never enough. What do you use? Do you just get some more chipboard and cut out a bunch of strips, or can you buy a big package of them? I don't know what to Google because I don't know what they're called!

And has anyone seen any 8.5 x 11 format albums by any brand besides Pioneer? That format makes so much sense, but that doesn't seem to be a size that the album manufacturers produce. How odd.

Gina...they are spine spacers as shown in the link

You could make your own from the backs of paper packs, mountboard or craft foam :o) Take care, Marilyn

Yep, that's the thingie. But I've realized that I'll probably have to make my own because the album is 8.5 x 11, so the ones that fit 12 x 12 will have the holes in the wrong place. I used to have some acid-free chipboard around here somewhere ...

I'll go comb the Pioneer site, too, this time searching for "spacer".

Thanks!

Gina,

I was strictly a 8.5x11 person until recently, as well as Katrina in here. Anyhow as you see paper size that size is getting harder and harder to find, although you can cut the 12x!! I always have. Anyhow I started to have a lot of problem finding page protectors so am switching to 12x size.

To do it all you need to do is take your previous sized page and add it to a 12x piece. Depending on what it is you can adjust to one side or up and down or center it then add more pictures and of course embellishments to the edges.

As for those fillers. get some of the cardboard pieces that stores get their paper packed on/in. Cut them in strips and punch the holes and put between every page or so depending on how an you need. Someone said you could use cardboard but seems to me would be too thick, but use something like thick paper board? Does that make sense?

Anyhow hope this helps and good luck.

BTW you are so welcome for the enabling if that is what it did - LOL!!

Don't know if they have what you're looking for, but I buy extra-wide albums for 8.5x11 from them so the sheet protectors don't stick out:

Good luck!

Dave, I make a lot of 8.5x11 too. I don't buy my protectors in LSS...too expensive. I always buy my page protectors in the office supply section of Walmart or OfficeMax or Office Depot. You get 50 protectors for less than $5. You might get 10 for the same price at a LSS. It is one of the reasons I don't do a lot of 12x12s...the page protectors are expensive.

Gina, I make my own spine spacers out of used shirt boxes. It is not as thick as chipboard, but it is readily available. I just draw around a spacer that came with the album and cut it out.

I use fun foam or mat board scraps from Michaels (or any frame shop).

I think Westrim makes 8 1/2 x 11 scrapbooks. Check out their website at:

Thanks! That's at least an alternative to Pioneer. It's good to have alternatives!

I still am. IMO the 12x12s are just too bulky and awkward to handle. Personally, I don't see myself ever going to 12x12s. I do buy 12" paper but there are still plenty of places that sell the 8 1/2" also. Albums are getting hard to come by though. Good quality ones anyway.

The extra wide are what I buy also. I always got them from HL but haven't been able to find any in at least 2 yrs now. I checked the website you posted but all I saw was 12" albums. I did sign up for a paper catalog though. Maybe it'll have some in it. Thanks for sharing Alicia!

I wonder if anyone has a good reference? I'm looking for a reliable online store that sells 8.5 x11 page protectors. I've made a recipe swap album, but are short a few protectors. I tried on Ebay, but no luck. If the store takes paypal, that would be really great!
