wishblade question

I'm considering trading up - selling all my sizzix stuff and buying a Wishblade. I've spent a lot of money on Sizzix as I end up "collecting" the dies and not using them as much as I should - this way, my "collecting" could be free fonts and shapes. (So definitely no cricut, etc, with cartridges to buy)

I do have a couple questions I've not found good answers for, I know there are at least a couple people in the group with a Wishblade.

  1. can it do construction paper? As I'm a teacher, this could be a deal breaker

  1. from what I understand, the consumable parts are the blades and cutting mat, right? How often do you find that you replace these things? (approx number of cuts - most likely i would use the thing in big spurts

- lots of things at one time, then nothing at all for a while)

  1. Is it really as easy as it says to use other fonts?

  1. Are new shapes available (free)? Are there communities who share custom-made shapes? How hard is it to make your own shapes to cut? (like, could i convert cliparts, or will it be very difficult? I am pretty well literate, I use to be a digiscrapper after all)

I purchased a Quickutz Silhouette a few months ago and I absolutely love it. It is very similiar in cost and function to the Wishblade but it cuts shapes larger than the Wishblade. I am an aspiring teacher in school and this sold me. It can cut construction paper. The blades and cutting mat are the consumable parts. I have not had to replace them. My cutting mat sticky part is dull. I read on a group to use Krylon Repositionable adhesive spray on it and it works like new. I sent my DH out for it and he brought back Craft Bond by Elmers. It works just not as well. This will however make the pad last longer. Some have concerns about the warranty of the machine but you need something to stick to the paper to the cutting mat. This works great and I have no concerns. There are shapes available free. The files are GSD files and you can find many groups that share the files. Europe seems to have us Americans beat on really utilizing this. Yahoo has a Wishblade group. It works for Silhouette and Craft Robo as well. You have to get permission from the moderator to join but it is so worth your time. There is a program called King Kong Capture that you can use to convert and to meld letters. I have it but have not used it yet. I hope to be able to get back to having fun during summer break. I have no life right now. It is easy to use other fonts. Yes it is as easy as they say. It will eventually replace your sizzix. I still keep mine just in case. Hope this helps! Jacqui
