Your scrapping process

I tend to be rather random in the way I approach scrapping., This can be good or bad, depending soley on your point of view. I tend to be more artsy and less rule oriented (the owner of our LSS has commented to me at crops that scrapping isn't worth doing if you don't put everything on the page STRAIGHT. I happen not to like STRAIGHT.)

Her comments (and the look she gives me that comes down her nose) makes me wonder if I am being TOO random. I usually sit down with pics and paper and just move them around until they feel right. Then I add the journalling and finally the embellishments. Am I doing it wrong? Is there a right? Should I sketch the page out first? Should I use more embellishments? I tend to colorblock a lot because I love paper.

Here are a couple of my latest pages from my fan scrapbook (simply because I have those uploaded for the fan goup to see):

My family books are a BIT more traditional, but not much, especially colorwise.

How do YOU scrap? What do you do first, second, etc?

I do mine about the same way you do. First I pick out the photos I want on the LO. Sometimes it's just one or two and sometimes it's six or seven. Then I look through my paper until I find what feels right. After laying out the photos on the paper I usually walk away for a while (anywhere from five minutes to a couple of days). After that I start re-arranging the photos until I get them where I want then. In the meantime I go through my ribbon and fibers if I want them on the page and pull out everything that looks good with the paper and photos and lay that out around the paper. By that time I'm ready to add any more embellishments if wanted and journaling. The last thing I do is look it all over for a few minutes before fastening down. I think this is why it takes me a while to do a page. Once in a while a page just gose together as I lay it down - other times it takes a few days to complete.

You are doing just fine Rach. This craft is done for YOU. If you don't like the look of your pages then what's the point. Sometimes I'll have a LO and something is just not looking right and finally a gentle twist of the photos to make them "not straight" and the page looks great. I say keep up the great work... your work! Don't worry about what other say about your creativity.

Hi Rach,

Well I think your LSS owner needs a new nose to look down of cause I absolutley love your pages and think that they are magazine worthy. You should consider sending your pages in somewhere. Then, when they get published, you can stick the magazine under that silly LSS owner's face.

For the record, I actually don't believe that scrapbooking truly has rules since it is more about preserving your memories, your way for the future rather than following some lady's rules so that all scrapbooks look the same.

So to your LSS owner I say phoey you are way off base!

Amen on all accounts MC!! I love the way a lot of your lo's look Rach, as well a most in here. We all have our own style. (however I look at the first ones did and I abhor them!)

I scarp a lot like Sandy described. I take and put everything together in power lo status in a big baggie separated with cardboard dividers Then when I get in the moo I pull out the stash, and often times change the paper which of course adds more time. I can not stand putting MOST of my pictures on the page straight. I like color blocking, but till like crooked pictures better!!

So keep up all the great work and I like it

I too tend to be random. I believe that we all scrap in our own way and that it's a personal choice on what we like. Some like things straight and measure everything (right Deb? (ducking from a sandle I know she's gonna throw at me!)) and some of us just eyeball everything. Don't worry about the snob at your LSS, I love your LO's!

Hi Rach, There is nothing wrong with your pages!! It sounds as though you and I are very similar in our approach to scrapping. I don't believe there is a right or a wrong way (as long as you are using acid/lignin free etc, afterall, this is a personal account of storing photo's and memories). Don't let the woman at your LSS bring you down, sounds like she is way too narrow-minded, and it surprises me that she owns an LSS with an attitude like that, she is sure to drive business away! In a nutshell, keep doing what you're doing, it's what you love and they are your pages, plus I think they are lovely :o) luv Cec....xxx

Rach, I like your LOs. I think the LSS is headed for disaster with an attitude like that. I scrap around the picture. If often takes me days to piece the LO together in my head before I even pull out the supplies...then the finished product is nothing like what I imagined. :-)

I can't say that I "follow the rules". First of all, what rules? LOL Seriously, I often find myself bumping into a balance problem. I always have an even number of pictures or something silly like that. In the end, I give up and do what I like.

I do shuffle pictures, journals, embellishments, etc. around before I start sticking things in place.

There's no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to scrapping... I very rarely measure anything with a ruler - I eyeball it all and put it on the page wherever I feel like it. Then if it's REALLY crooked or looks stupid I pull it off and do it again, but usually it's just fine the way it is.

I usually start by finding my papers that I want to use and try to find a nice photo mat/s and I put the photos onto the page first in a pleasing arrangement and then I scrap around them adding embellishments as it seems appropriate.

I think your pages look great also! The only "rule" I ever follow is to never knowingly put anything in my book that will do damage to my photos. I want them to last for decades, and I hope several generations down the line will still want to keep them. But seriously, that's my only rule. Aside from that, this is a craft, a hobby, and even an art! You put together whatever makes you happy. For right now, my scrapbooks are for me, and if the layouts make me happy, then that makes them perfect.

Don't worry about the woman at the LSS - she has issues. *wink*

I think it looks like a lot because of the shelves I have it on, though I am a technique fanatic and tend to go with fads in scrapbooking. I have to try everything at least once to see if I can do it. One way I am able to get so much stuff is the coupons at places like Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Joann's. I also taught classes for a while for a friend who has a small store. She paid me in tools of the trade. One of the big topics I see right now is storage. I might suggest files on your site which feature several different techniques with directions and samples - where others can add to what you have as well as learn from them. As you can tell from recent posts here ATC's are big right now as well as some of the older techniques coming back such as color blocking. As new people start to scrapbook they are looking to learn some of these that others have been doing for a while. Also new scrappers need help with basics such as how to use a trimmer for measuring, matting techniques, adhesives, etc..... Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your kind words. You really have amde me feel a bit better about the way I do things.

This woman would have driven me from the LSS completely if it weren't for Fridays. On Fridays, she isn't there, and the woman who fills in is wonderful, so I try only to go then. This LSS is walking distance from my house so I hate to give it up.

I guess all I can do is trudge along with my own process and ignore her. I work like many of you do. I like to aly things out then go back later and look at it again to see if I still like it before I glue anything down.

Thank you so much! You are such GOOD friends!

I agree witht the rest - there is NO right or wrong way! It should be about the fun, creativity, and memory preservation!

Here, and with other fellow 'bookers, I've seen a variety of styles, and processes. It all turns out beautiful! Some people are book people, some are page people, some are random, some are precise...some can do layouts and add pics later, some have to wirk around the pics.

Me, I tend to be a book person, and have to work around the photos I am using, and then the page is sometimes precise, sometimes random...:)

So - yes, phooey on that lady who looks down her nose at you.

:)

They are all very good layouts and actually look well thought out.

I tend to try and make everything straight but that is because I am highly anal retentive. This weekend I forced myself to place a photo on an angle and after that I just couldn't pull it together and the layout is kind of bland. To make up for it I had to make a mini-album so I could have everything boxy and straight to get over it. I also used ripped paper for the first time this weekend. I like the look on other peoples layouts but everytime I thought about doing it before panic would set in.

It could be this lady is also anal retentive but she really shouldn't criticize you for being easy going.

Where's this LSS so I can avoid going there? LOL Your LO's are great, Rach! I see nothing wrong with them, and you really should consider submitting them for publication. I always start with the photos when I scrap, trying to find just the right paper and colors. I just lay the photos, mats, embellishments, etc out on my background until it looks right and feels right. I don't think there's a right or wrong way, it's all about preserving our memories for future generations.

Oh! Thank you but they aren't NEARLY good enough for publishing! I do, however, appreciate you saying that.

I scrap a lot like you Rach, I guess. I gather my pics and then the paper, this is the hardest for me, I take way to long picking paper. I lay my pics out to see where they look good and what needs cropped. Then I matte and start sticking everything down. I place them at angles, straight, overlap, whatever floats my boat. I'm not much for a bunch of embellishments so that's the last thing I think about.

Nobody should look down their nose at you for your style. It's strictly a personal preference. I'm sure you don't tell her that everything's too straight, even though you may want to sometimes. ;-}
