Finding my style

I think I have finally found my scrapbooking style. I lean toward the simple, maybe because I don;t really know how to use embellishments. I have now started an album for myself of my kids' growing up years and how I can be a bit cuter with that, but I have to tell you the story of the first page in that album.

The first page is my daughter's birth (she's older than my son). I bought this cute pink and white paper that said "baby" and had a theme of footprints and handprints in vellum, that had a matching regular paper in blue for a boy. The paper is DARLING but once I started putting the page together, I started to wonder. Something wasn't right here. Even as a baby, Laura, my DD, wasn't a ruffles and lace sort of girl. I always told people she was more gingham and eyelet, and that's still true. The paper, I realized was just TOO pink and white. So what did I do? I grabbed some black material with pink polka dots and black middie braid and came up with this.

TO be honest, it worried me it, seeing black as appropriate for a baby page, but it LOOKS right for Laura. I still need to find something for the tag. The journaling is on a black piece of cardstock that I pierced with a round hole punch so the pink would show through and imitate the fabric on the tag. My son's page was blue and white and needed punch, so I added red. I have a bit of bead work still to add to it.

Now we come to my first question. You will notice that neither page has a title, other than what was pre-printed. I am absolutely LOUSY at titles! Not at thinking of them, but as making them. ANY help would be appreciated! I have Print Shop version 20 and PSP which I use extensively since my handwriting is truly dreadful. I don't see many sticker letters I like.

My second question is, I'm hopeless with embellishments. Mine always look too busy so I wind up not using them much., Other people's look wonderful, but mine just come out silly looking. Any tips there would also be appreciated.

That's it! I'm sorry this is so long. I'll try not to be so long winded again in the near future.

Hugs, Rach

The pages look fine to me...

My handwriting is pretty appalling so I never try to hand-letter an actual title unless I'm using a stencil. I've got a couple of lettering stencils that look pretty good when you cut out the letters and put them through a mini-xyron, but really lettering stickers are my friend.

I often use the printer to make titles - you can either do the title and print it out on an appropriate colour of acid-free paper and trim it up nicely and stick it on like journalling, or alternatively you can print it on white and then tape the sheet down to your cardstock or paper, and cut the letters out individually.

If you don't like embellishments, then don't use them. There's no law that says you have to! Scrapping is a very individual hobby... that pink baby page looks finished to me without anything fancy on it :)

I agree with Karen. The pages look fine to me. Sometimes if you add too much to a page, it takes away from the page. Simple is sometimes so much better and I think if you added more to the pages would take away from it. I like the black and pink. It is really sweet. I also really like the blue with a touch of red. That was a great idea.

I also have a hard time coming up with titles on my pages and I luckily found a great item on Ebay. The lady was selling 15,000 sayings, titles, and quotes for scrapbooking/card making. It was like $2.95. After I paid for it, she emailed it to me in Word Format and then I printed it out. So, now when I am stumped thinking of a title, I just turn to my little "book". It has really come in handy. She may still be selling them, if you'd like for me to find out, I will.

Rach, I agree with Jennifer. Simple is better. Your pages look great. I've been reading up on making my own rub-ons printed with the printer on transparency. I'm going to give it a try. That might be a great way to make titles, too. Sandy

That sounds like a good idea. I'm a bit of a writer so journaling is actually the easiest thing for me. Its getting a title printed in a useable format that gives me trouble. I have printed them and trimmed them down. Can you guys suggest some fonts that look good when cut out? I have some, but not many.

I also have made my own transparencies, one sheet with my own writings and one with other people's. If I use my own writings, I don't have to worry about copyright infringement. LOL I keep a Word file on my computer to record things I run across as I read. Would one of those sayings be acceptable for a title?

Thank you for offering to find out about the book. I should really go spend some time on eBay looking around. I live in a small town, and all we have in scrapbooking stuff is one lss, Hobby Lobby, and Wal-Mart.

Thank you< Karen. Now, a really dumb question. What's a mini-xyron?

How do you do rub-ons? Is there a special ink to use?

Whoa! Where did you read about this? I LOVE rub on letters and words. I'd love to make my own!

I'm on that bandwagon! I spend a fortune on rub-ons because I love the way they look! They are faster than typing and printing and a lot less messy than stamps! I was glad to see that Karen Foster has come out with run-on sheets with salutations. I bought one package of different Thank Yous and different Happy Birthdays for the cards I make!

So yes, even if it was a little bit of work, I'd still love to hear more about making my own!

I don't know how you do it. You have my supreme respect.

Though, my husband would love it because I couldn't spend as much money.

Rach your pages are wonderful. I love the pink and black of Laura's page and the red and blue of your son's page. I tend to like the simple pages too. I usually do my titles on the computer, use alphabet stickers, or use my sizzix machine to cut out the letters. I have even cut letters out of extra pictures.
