babylock overlocker mechanical problem

Hi,

I have just bought a second hand babylock imagine wave. It was working fine and I have just had it serviced to make sure all is well. It was working fine just after the service too, but today when I got it out to start sewing I found that the motor is not working. When I press the pedal the whole system moves one small step and then stops. There is no sound from the motor after that. If I press the pedal again sometimes the whole system steps again and then stops and sometimes it doesn't move at all. If I move the fly wheel by hand then press the pedal sometimes it moves a step and again and sometimes does nothing. Nothing that I have done has resulted in the system working for more than a single step, and it is the same threaded or unthreaded. I have checked that it is plugged in properly. Does anybody have any idea of what may be wrong? At the service they just replaced the lower looper.

Thanks,

Jen

Most (all?) sergers/overlockers have a safety interlock feature which will not allow them to run if the door to the loopers is open even a *tiny* amount. Check for that, and if that is not the problem, take it back to where you had it serviced? Another possibility is that the foot pedal is damaged or the wiring is shorted out.

Without actually looking at it My best guess is motor brushes. These make the contact in the motor. The clue was the hand wheel. Try finding it in a place it does not start. Keeping the foot pedal all the way down turn the hand wheel. You may feel it try to start or it will just start. Those are very good indications the motor brushes need replacing. Not something a tech would look at without some complaint about it.

Hi,

Thanks for thinking this over. We did actually try that and it didn't do anything. Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Jen

Hi again,

I just had another go on my overlocker to see if a night's sleep helped it. It's all back to normal, and working perfectly now. :-)

Thanks,

Jen
