A quick google search suggests these are way more popular in the UK and australia than in the states. Anyone know a US mail-order supplier, or better still, retail shop in NYC that would have them?

Do you have an Ikea anywhere near? I remember seeing one out of the plane window as I was flying out of somewhere on the east coast.
Ikea sell roller blinds. I know you want a kit, but Ikea's blinds are cheap enough that you can use them as a kit. The mechanism works well.
