I quote some earlier maillist correspondence that may be relevant to some here:

I've been meaning to post here on this subject for some time. Especially, video authors should beware of selling your wares to anyone involved with technicalvideorental.com.

Original post was to the clocks mailing list: Hi List,

My initial response was:

Don't they have Copyright?

Somebody pointed this out to me last year. My understanding of the law is that video rental companies can legally buy a video and then rent it out to individuals. It still constitutes private viewing. I may not like it, but I did not write the law, and I certainly have no way to fight it. I could complain, but that time spent is wasted, and could be better served doing something else - like getting ready for another video. ;-) Not that I am yet, but someday...

How is that any different from what the libraries do with books. And I don't think it has to do with rent vs free. Fair use includes lending it to a friend, or circulating it, so long as no ADDITIONAL copies are made.

I thought the OP said that Copies were made. But I've been wrong before.

Not as I read it:

I would guess the renters copied it though.
