OT: progress on Baja house

Just an update for those who 're interested...

Spent 5 days there and we were busy every day...

met with electrician

met with cabinet maker

met contractor several times

picked out tile for floors, showers, counter tops, patios, etc.

picked out paint for interior/exterior

opened Mexican bank account

got Mexican cell phone and service

put rv in storage and arranged for them to move our stuff down when the house is ready

contributed to the local economy by drinking large quantities of Tecate every night..

We're hoping to have windows, doors, etc. in 2 more months and all tile work done... cabinet maker has 2 month backlog but shouldn't be a problem..

Pictures posted this morning at alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking for those that might be interested... Mac

Tecate? You should be a Dos Eqis man. Are you moving there legally? I heard that Mexico has some very strong laws and polocies regarding immigration. We thought about retiring there some time ago, but were turned off by people we met that had tried living there. Not in the Baja though. Good luck and enjoy, Hank

Nah, he's going to walk across the desert with a lathe on his back. :)

Though I wonder how they justify making it hard to move *to* Mexico when so many people risk death to move *out* of it. You'd think they'd be happy to trade for some wealthy Gringos.

Yeah, Hank.. legally with a "FM3" visa and all... and it's a lot of hassle...

You have to have income, an address, at least $1,500 in a Mexican bank, references from 3 citizens, passport, etc.... You can NOT have any job that would/could be done by a Mexican citizen and unless you're importing your job from the states like my web work, you probably wouldn't want to work there since the minimum wage is about $5 a day..

Baja is almost as different from "mainland" Mexico as it is from California.. maybe more so..

In Baja, they WANT you to move there and spend money.. *g* Mac

They alkso, at least until recently, have/had a policy whereby foreigners couldn't really buy property -- it's always subject to potential seizure by the government and reallocation to Mexican citizens.

Is this still true? I've heard some horror stories.

You can't "own" land within a certain distance from the coast.. I think it' s 5 miles??

You buy the land and it's held in a trust by the bank.. pretty standard now with title insurance, etc.. Our grant is 50 years, which is a lot longer than I'll be alive..

In the past, there were a lot of crooked developers that were selling land that didn't have clear title.. mostly Indian land... and some folks lost their investment.. You see a LOT of developments that got started and then just ran out of momentum and died.. Mac
