Carding machine in UK?

Hi group, I wonder if anybody can help me find somewhere in the UK where I can buy a small carding machine. My partner, Cath, had a quick go on one at a craft fair and now has asked for one for her xmas present! We have some Alpaca wool to card ready for spinning and weaving. I have not told her about it yet so it will be an excellent surprise for her!

Many thanks for any advice,

Best regards,

Dave.

I got my carding machine from .

I can't remember how much it was because it was around 3 years ago, but it works fine:)

Thanks Ophelia. I have emailed David but it has come back as undeliverable so perhaps he's changed his email address. Was it a one-off sale or was that his business I wonder?

There must be somebody in the UK who sells them, or I guess I could get one imported from overseas if I could find a reliable seller.

Regards,

Dave.

In the US they're called 'drum carders' - maybe you could find a supplier using that term.

I got one from Barnetts but he is no longer making them. There is still a website up for looking after existing carders

Wingham wool stock the Ashford one at 225 pounds.

Thanks Tamar, that was a great help. Certainly brings up a lot more results in Google and eBay. Knowing the correct name for it certainly helps!

I see my choices are Ashford at £220-ish or on eBay there's a Van der Have Holland one for £162 inc postage and also a couple of Barnett's. My inclination is to go for the cheapest but does anybody have any comments about differences between the 3, Ashford, Barnett or Van der Have Holland?

Many thanks for all your responses so far, they've all been really helpful and a tribute to the friendliness of this newsgroup.

Best regards,

Dave.

I've never actually used one, and the ones I've seen I didn't know the brand name of. On the other hand, I have read a lot of weblogs and I don't remember ever hearing anyone criticize a drum carder, so I think they all work pretty well. The price differences may be from size differences, or how nice the finish is.

Hi didn't see the original message so maybe you are alright for a drum now. If not:- it maybe worth having a look at

they have all sorts in for sale David Barnett has hung up his ''drums'' and retired. Ashford do drums too, this may be a way to go

I use a Barnett, and for alot of fleece it is great, like for rug making, however, if you are needing to pick out the best bits of a fleece for a special knitted/crocheted item, I would recommend you still hand card this said I use mine most of the time, but then I do alot of rug weaving from my handspun yarns. I also use a large Hackle,

I have checked with my uk spinning and weaving group, and none for sale on the site there are three on ebay uk at the moment

230056718824 8hrs left 250054900229 ends 7th Dec this is the Barnett one 280056141942 from the Netherlands

Wishing you all the best........Cheers.........Cher
