Felting soap

Hello! This is Dora Renee' Wilkerson. I just wanted to let you all know that my kids and I felted soap today for the first time. It was fast, easy, and fun to do. I really enjoyed doing it with them. I posted a mini video on my blog and a couple of pictures if anyone would like to see it.

Someone should have warned me..lol.. I really did like doing this project. Now this week we are going to make our own soap (I wish I would have known that I liked felting over soap so much because I would have made a ton of soap up and then felted it all for gifts.) Oh, well it's fun and I can just do it again!! lol..

Hey, what other things like this is so addicting? I should just ask now because I don't need any more addictions...lol... I don't think I'll have a bar of soap in my house anymore that isn't felted.

Am I the only one who can't figure out why one would want felted soap? THere must be a gap in my education...

Georgia spun a FINE 'yarn':

No, Georgia, you're not. For *me* tho, I attributed/READ/BLAMED my lack of understanding to my cluster headache! Noreen

Good to see you back Noreen - I hope you're feeling better. It was probably all that excitement you generated on the board earlier in the week that caused it! ;-)

No, you are not the only one as I was just as puzzled but my friend Google almost never fails to find an answer.

has a good explanation.

My grandma has a sort of flannel with a zip, and the soap goes inside. It's kind of nifty, and the soap never slips out of your hands, and I loved it as a child. It also meant that she could just slip in the last little bits, making it go further. I'm guessing felted soap has a similar purpose, except for the thrift aspect; it makes a kind of soap-and-washcloth in one.

If you search on "felted soap", you will find a plethora of how-to sites.

Thank you everyone for the explanations. I checked the googled site, and it seemed too cool not to try--so I sent it to the kids, and maybe that will discharge my urge to try it!

It's really easy to do but my kids did make a little of a mess (that doesn't bother me much tho. Really I guess if I think about it it's just soap and water so I guess you can't call it a mess..lol..) I think the whole project maybe took us 20 min. to do (and that's with me grabbing my camera to take pictures here and there.)

Let us know how it goes after you do it. I really liked doing it myself.

"The kids" are 47, 44, 32, and 29; I don't worry about them making messes.

Hey, you're NEVER too old to make a mess! After a while, though, you are old enough to *clean it up* yourself. :-)

Thank-you, you made me laugh already this morning. I think you'll be ok with your young ones doing this project for sure. By the way I fall into that group myself (older then your youngest but a few years.. Ok, some might say a lot but I don't...lol..) and I still make a mess myself (the only bad thing is that I have no one else to clean up after me so I get stuck doing it..lol..)

Good luck and I hope you all have a great time doing it!

I have also heard that it lessons the slimy soap scum by keeping the soap higher in the dish. Madelaine

I didn't know that! I think that's neat because I really don't like that slimy soap scum myself.

Thanks for telling us.

Ya'll DO know that drying your soap off makes it last longer, right? Noreen

some mornings its all I can do to remember to dry myself off--I'm walking around, getting ready to get dressed and I'm like "why am I wet? Did the dog dry himself off on me again?" I'm only semi-joking--for some reason, I tend to skip drying my legs. Another soap extension tip--and this one is great--is to keep it for a few months before you use it. Madelaine
