Since it is a little sparkly, I am going to use it for a fancy scarf. My DD is already saying that it would look good on her!

Hi,

I got my free Disco yarn today and it's called Aqua Velvet, also the patterns and Mary Maxim catalog.

Now what is confusing me is they have a sale flyer listing Red Heart Giant yarn on sale and it's 225 grams each. Well, the giant that I have and am looking for more is 340 grams. My super saver says it 225 grams so must be Red Heart is changing their labels just to confuse us.

Hugs,

Nora

Nora, Is Aqua Velvet a kind of turquiose? I think that many yarn makers are down-sizing balls of yarn, but not down-sizing price.

Hi Katherine,

Yes, it's a bright turquiose blue, very pretty. I agree about the prices, same price, smaller skeins.

Hi! That yarn must be beautiful! I can almost see the shade of sea in my eyes. And not any sea, but like the sea near Crete Island or something like that. Best: Pirjo

I heard from our sales reps that this is the influence of Walmart. Walmart insist on a certain price point, and the only way the manufacturers can keep that point is to downsize the balls. Remember, acrylic yarn is made from petrolium, and we all know what has happened to the price of oil.

A pox on Walmart!

I refuse to set foot in their stores, but they still seem to negatively affect my own decisions in the marketplace!

As far as the price of acrylic going up, that's all the more reason/excuse to go for natural fibers instead.

Nyssa, who prefers wool, linen, cashmere, cotton, and mohair anyway

Hi Roger,

Thank you for the explanation, makes a lot of sense.

So, if I get this right, (correct me if I am wrong)......only Walmart would be selling the smaller skeins so their prices stay low. Hmmm, I am going to have to pay closer attention to the weights next time I buy.

Not exactly, Di. Walmart is RedHeart's biggest customer. Walmart basically forced RedHeart (Coats and Clark) to downsize their skeins, and Coat's and Clark will now downsize ALL their skeins. JM2C, Noreen

Very interesting, Noreen.

I don't know if I have relayed this story on Walmart, but when my mom was working in the factory ( cleaning products) if Walmart put in an order, everything ceased until that order was filled. Even making their workers do 12 hour days and weekends. ( No union, so work or else.!)

It seems that they were their biggest customers so what they say goes. It may be the same with yarn, as well as many other products.

I guess the consumer does not know what is really going on before products are placed on the shelves of some stores.

Anyway, sorry for unloading, rotten day at work tonight :(

Di, That wasn't unloading! That was telling us something we didn't know. Hope tomorrow is better. Katherine
