Mirjam -- a Hanukkah question that you can answer for me. We were always taught that Judah Maccabee (hero of the Hanukkah story) was called that because "Maccabee" means "hammer." So, in modern Hebrew, if you want a hammer do you go into a hardware store and ask for a maccabee? Is it still the same word? thanks -- Jackie

Ok Jackie ,,, here comes the explantion. Now adays we write Maccabi with a Caf , but in Talmudic times we wrote it with a KUf . Makevet is a mallet , or a sledge hammer, thus the idea was that Jehudah , was as strong as a sledge hammer. The Added i might say he used one ,,, for example, Hashmal is electricity, the electrician is called Hashmalai .

The modern Maccabi written with the caf is considered as intial letters to Mi Camocha BaElim Adonay Who Is Like You God amongst the Gods Which has to do with the Ideological difference that went on between the Greek and the Jews , which eventually gave birth to Christianity. If you go into a shop today and ask for a Makevet , you will get a Big heavy hammer . We don`t make such a big difference between modern Hebrew and older Hebrew,,,,it is allone big langugae. mirjam
