Wow! Thank you everyone for your advice on on my hat problem and your kind welcome to this group. I'm going to "experiement" with this hat to see what can be done to fix the laddering problem. It's a pumpkin hat I had knit for my toddler for Halloween this year, so it's not a giant problem if I can't repair that particular hat. I was watching my son run around with the hat on the other day and it got me thinking about finally addressing the issue.

I learned to knit in 1987, and you would think that after this much time, I'd be a pretty amazing knitter, but I'm not. :-) I knit a great deal of baby hats for charity right now, as it's quick and portable, which is necessary when you're chasing a 2 year old and 4 year old around. I'm currently knitting the Haikku toddler sweater featured on the Knitty.com website for my 4 year old. I always seem to have too many projects going at once to get things finished in a timely manner, though. And I'm an admitted yarn junkie.

I look forward to posting here. I already have another question about a knitting pattern I've completed, but I'll save that for another post. :-)

thanks again everyone!

I tried 'em. They may work for smaller needles, but for the larger ones I like to use they kept falling off.

Maybe we can have one in Haifa or Tel Aviv someday Mirjam. Then we would all have to become rich to afford the air fair. :)

You can do a moebious of any size on DPN.

You need (at least ) 9 needles of just the right length for the moebious you want to do, and a short flexible needle that you use on rows 2 &3 to knit the stitches at the end of the needles, then transfer those knit stitches to the needle that will hold the stitches. Rows 2 & 3 are slow and very hard.

If I had to do it again I would do the first few rows on circs, then transfer to DPN.

Once you have a dozen rows done, the knitting sheath comes into its own and lets you finish in a flash. Do not even think about doing a moebious on DPN without a knitting sheath. Nine needles is 18 sharp little points (20 during early rows). This evening I use sock needles for a moebious with 80 stitches cast on.

I have enough 18" needles in the house to make a moebious for an elephant.

((chuckling)) 18" needles is a bit too much for me to visualise, but trying to picture an elephant in a moebius . . . . . . rofl

The wonderful thing about knitting is that EACH one can work as it suits him/her ,,,, each one uses his/her experiences ,,, since i knit my moebuiouses mostly on the way , in buses and trains i thnk using a regular circular and not a bunch of DPs , is the RATIONAL thing to do. mirjam

I agree that it is very much a personal choice, Mirjam.

I prefer circular needles as I find them easier to maneuver having been in hospital just a few weeks ago to have carpal tunnel syndrome corrected in my right hand. Soon I hope to have the left wrist repaired also. Apart from knitting I have spent about 60 years crocheting, sewing and tailoring, embroidering, then working (manually) with tax ledgers, keyboarding when computers arrived and typing "just because I could".

When you're young you don't think about anything wearing out but thank goodness now it can usually be repaired.

Welcome from me also, Lisa.

Apologies too, I was so busy chatting about knitting I completely forgot why I replied in this thread. :-)

You can recommend me anyway if you like, Mirjam :-) I'd enjoy the notoriety!

You will soon have that red jumper finished and will feel a million dollars when you wear it. It sounds beautiful already.

Are the artworks you are creating sewing? Please could you again post the page on which you show the "Lights of Haifa" embroidery as I lost the reference to it and would love to add that to my favourites.

Doing one on DPN is like some kind of circus trick. Useful only if you can sell tickets to the show, or maybe if your knitting guild goes into a pub, it would make a good bar bet - "I bet 10 skeins alpaca that I can knit a moebious on DPN." It can be done, and it can be finished before last call. But then, what is the use of being able to knit an object in one sitting? We are here for the knitting process, and want to prolong it as much as possible.

My point is that knitting sheaths dramatically reduce stress on the wrists and dramatically reduce the potential for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Physics says that knitting needles are levers for moving yarn. With circular needles your fingers are both the effort and the fulcrum. Regardless of how you hold the circs, there will be a torque on your wrist. There will be stain on your the tendons in your wrist. This will aggravate carpal tunnel syndrome. Such torques cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

With a knitting sheath, force to the working needle is transmitted through the front of the wrist, palm and base of the thumb. The knitting sheath provides a fulcrum that offers huge leverage for moving the yarn. Thus, there is no strain on the tendons in the carpal tunnel, NONE. I had a carpal tunnel syndrome flair up last summer/fall as a result of dressing the stone for my wife's new garden wall. I rested my wrists by knitting a gansey at 8+ stitches per inch out of yarn with a weight of 960 yd/lb. With a knitting sheath, that is resting your wrists.

If you knit smart, carpal tunnel syndrome will not occur, and thus will not need to be repaired.

Oh, and a byproduct is that you will knit faster.

Years ago , a wonderful friend said to me "some of us are weavers some of us just WEAVE" , i feel that now i can say this about your answer, "Some of us are knitters , some of us `Just Knit`." I am not into circus shows, I knit because i want to have clothes i can wear , with materials , patterns, sizes and prices i can have. I knit because it fills for me an inner need. I am not a quick knitter, but i am a good knitter. The abilty to make my own clothes as well as for some other people , is important to my mental and philosophical state of mind, I also Knit Art projects. I also do other fiber techniques. I don`t have a guild , but i have many ex students to whom i gifted some knitting or other fiber knowledge which now enriches their lives. I think your Mockery , and patronizing letters, are rude. i think you are not a kind person , You have no empathy for the many people who like me , feel this is an important part of our life ,,, without your Patronizing tunes. You don`t know Everything Better, you don`t know how , where and which circumstances other people live and knit ... you don`t know in which ways you offend and insult people , not that you really care , you enjoy it . mirjam

Bless you Aaron I wish I had known that 60 years ago.

It is only in the last few years that there has been such a thing as carpal tunnel syndrome. For all the years that I crocheted it was unheard of and I have been crocheting since I was 4 years old. Knitting is something I only took up again recently, not having done much since I was in my teens.

The worst damage to my wrists was done by RSI from using computers that had not been set up properly.

I do not do enough knitting to warrant learning to use a sheath, although I must admit anything new is interesting. My rest is now taken by gardening as I also take pleasure from growing things whether they be herbs or flowers or fruit.

Bernadette.
