New to Group; also need your help

Hello, all. Though I'm a new member to this group, I do feel as if Iknow at least some of you. I've had Google alert me via email wheneverthe word knit is used on the 'net, and many of the alerts I've receivedhave been from this group. I've much enjoyed your discussions,assistance to others and friendships with each other. :)To introduce myself, I learned to knit as a child but preferred otherhandcrafts, i.e., crochet, sewing, embroidery, needlepoint, macrame,tatting, etc. Crochet has always been my passion, and I can create justabout anything crocheted without a pattern. However, in the lastseveral years my hands have become increasingly impaired by carpaltunnel (and perhaps arthritis) so that to crochet is nearly impossibleand extremely painful. I stopped handwork and making things ... andreally missed it.So recently I thought perhaps I could knit without the pain andcrippling for days afterward. I taught myself to work the yarn with myfingers as I'd always yo'd by moving my entire arm, letting go of theneedle and having to hold the needle standing into my thigh. I searchedpictures on the 'net and found many of ladies working the yarn withtheir fingers ... and I'm happy to report that I learned and amknitting now without pain to my hands or to my back from the constantmovement of my arm. :)This change enabled me to progress my skill to include using dp'sand/or circulars, and I've started knitting socks to learn. And thiswhere my need for your help comes in....I'm working a pattern for socks, and there's an abbreviation in theinstructions I don't understand. Here's the portion of the pattern(it's in the part for the heel): Make heel: Divide 30 sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave forinstep. With A, knit 15 sts off first needle onto end of third needle. 30 stsfor heel. Next row: (WS). With MC. K1. P13. P2tog. P13. K1. 29 sts. Next row: *K1. Sl1K. Rep from * to last st. K1. Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1. Rep last 2 rows until heelmeasures 2=BD ins...

Wow, Nora! Y'all just keep teaching me all kinds of things! I set up Yahoo photos a couple years ago but never noticed that option to make public or keep private. Just tried making my (old) album private, checked in under another name, and it did let me in when it hadn't (under the other name) when it was still marked (by default) as private!

Thanks for the tip! My DB (brother) will be really glad to hear about this too 'cause he supposedly spent a LONG time setting up an album only to have nobody be able to see it!

Thanks so much, Nora, and you too, Noreen. I've missed you guys, too. Nothing spectacular made me go away, I just got overwhelmed with a lot of situations and life in general and found I didn't have anything to say about knitting other than I was doing it or I wasn't. But one of my sisters who taught herself to crochet asked me about crocheting cables (the crochet Aran book she got from the library totally crapped out on that, saying "since most crocheters are familiar with it..." can you believe it), and I got to thinking I know JUST where to ask. A Google groups search turned up only a couple of entries, but I sent her those (Els, this is the sister you so kindly sent one of your kumihimo kits to, and she loves it) so we'll see. Our baby sis (the youngest of us five daughters...and five sons) asked the older four girls to her place last Saturday for games & relaxation and we had a great time.

I'm especially embarrassed about disappearing after I'd said I'd do an rcty FAQ. I still have the file I started but don't know when I'll get back to it.

Glad to see you all back, especially Gem.

I got the Not Just Socks book at Xmas and am on my third (yes, third!) pair of fingertipless gloves -- that ruffled cuff is a royal pain. I feel like I need a massage after every round, especially with small-gauge needles. I'm experimenting with a pair of socks from the book with the bulls-eye heels, on size 0 needles. The massage gloves from Patternworks really help my hands...leaving my shoulders to get stiff from too much knitting!

Yes , Spampot !!! All those spellings , Hava , Cahva Khava , just try to spell a letter that doesn`t exist in English ,,, The Dutch have no problem with this , if you ever heard how a Dutch person says Van Goch ? or Acht =8 You will know what i mean , i think the Gutural pronounciation of the G in Dutch is a left over from Spanish rule there . mirjam
