Hi Eve,

Why I had to give up most of the knitting as I developed tendonitis in my left thumb from doing too much of it right after I retired. I'm left handed, but knit and crochet right handed. With crocheting right handed I do have to be careful not to do the same thing. I had the start of it last summer and had to take it easy, but now am back up to speed.

Hugs,

Nora

Welcome Eve This is defently a great group to be apart of. Most of your questions can probably be answered by 4 or 5 people. I have been useing looms and have heard from people in other groups that I am a part of that they are not able to knit for many of the reasons you gals mentioned here and have been over joyed to work with the looms. I don't know how many of you use looms, but it might be worth looking into. Andrea

EVE i didn`t excplain myself well EVE is a variation of the HEBREW BIBLICAL name Hava , i only used the Spanish name to explain to you that you can`t pronouce Hava as it should be pronounced ,, since we have a letter CHET that is not coming over like it seems in writing but resembles the way the Spanish pronounce the letter J in Juan etc,, . After all they were some 400 years Under Arabic speaking Autorities. It is also like we say Le Haim if you ever heard that ,,,, mirjam Sorry to have confused you ,,,

Thanks, Jan and Katherine, for clearing that up. Glad to hear I'm not going crazy (or at least not as quickly as I thought I was! LOL!).

Looks like your question was answered thoroughly, Eve. Good luck with the rest of your socks and I can't wait to see a picture!

Hi Eve, Welcome to the group! It was certainly a pleasure seeing your post as "New to Group" after the other unmentionable "New to Group." I'm glad you are having success with knitting again. I hope you will be able to post a picture of your new socks once they are finished.

Janise

To introduce myself, I learned to knit as a child but preferred other handcrafts, i.e., crochet, sewing, embroidery, needlepoint, macrame, tatting, etc. Crochet has always been my passion, and I can create just about anything crocheted without a pattern. However, in the last several years my hands have become increasingly impaired by carpal tunnel (and perhaps arthritis) so that to crochet is nearly impossible and extremely painful. I stopped handwork and making things ... and really missed it.

So recently I thought perhaps I could knit without the pain and crippling for days afterward. I taught myself to work the yarn with my fingers as I'd always yo'd by moving my entire arm, letting go of the needle and having to hold the needle standing into my thigh. I searched pictures on the 'net and found many of ladies working the yarn with their fingers ... and I'm happy to report that I learned and am knitting now without pain to my hands or to my back from the constant movement of my arm. :)

This change enabled me to progress my skill to include using dp's and/or circulars, and I've started knitting socks to learn. And this where my need for your help comes in....

I'm working a pattern for socks, and there's an abbreviation in the instructions I don't understand. Here's the portion of the pattern (it's in the part for the heel):

Make heel: Divide 30 sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. With A, knit 15 sts off first needle onto end of third needle. 30 sts for heel. Next row: (WS). With MC. K1. P13. P2tog. P13. K1. 29 sts. Next row: *K1. Sl1K. Rep from * to last st. K1. Next row: K1. Purl to last st. K1. Rep last 2 rows until heel measures 2½ ins [6 cm], ending with WS facing for next row.

Shape Heel: 1st row: K1. P14. P2tog. P1. Turn. 2nd row: K3. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 3rd row: P4. P2tog. P1. Turn. 4th row: K5. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 5th row: P6. P2tog. P1. Turn. 6th row: K7. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 7th row: P8. P2tog. P1. Turn. 8th row: K9. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 9th row: P10. P2tog. P1. Turn. 10th row: K11. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 11th row: P12. P2tog. P1. Turn. 12th row: K13. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn. 13th row: P14. P2tog. P1. Turn. 16 sts. Break yarn.

My question is what's Sl1K, first appearing in the second row of these instructions? I can see by reading through to the "Shape Heel" part that this is reducing the number of stitches (from 30 to 18), but I'm not sure how to do this because it's not the expected psso or K2tog. Can any of you tell me exactly what stitches I'm to do?

Many thanks in advance for your help! I'm pleased to have joined and look forward to becoming one of you and making friends.

Hey again all! TA DAAA!!!! I finished my first sock today!!!! YEAH!!!!! I built a website since your post, Janise, 'cause I realized that I hadn't a way to post any pictures for y'all otherwise. (No biggie -- it's the free Yahoo deal.) Though I can use Yahoo photos, I think anyone who isn't a Yahoo member can't see 'em (a couple friends of mine couldn't when they weren't Yahoo-ers.) This isn't a problem with a webpage.

Anyhow, I built the site (just a little personal fun page), took some pictures of the ONE sock to show you ... and the pictures came out too light and hafta be retaken. Of course, my batteries have gone dead, so I'm recharging them now. LOL

Hopefully I'll get the picture(s) tomorrow and post the address for y'all to see. I'd never have gotten past that blasted heel had y'all not been so helpful with explaining Sl1K! :o)

PS - How come the links here aren't highlighted or underlined? I can't find how to make that happen. Had hoped y'all could just click without the annoyance of cutting and pasting!

TO avoid that "gap", I usually pick up an extra stitch right in the corner. It doesn't affect the finished product, other than to cover the hole. Nice sock, BTW. HTH

Katherine! Ha! I will think of you as "the sock lady" !! I'll try your pick-up-a-stitch suggestion to fill that gap on my next pair. I won't do it on the mate to this one so that they will match ... even down to the gap! Thanks TONS for your help with this learning experience. :o)

DA, I'm sure you're right that they'll get easier the more I do. I had DH try on my ONE sock (since it's big, it almost fits him; just a little short). He liked it and loved the warmth and feel ... so I'll probably make some for him too.

Janise, so sorry you couldn't get onto the site. I have that trouble sometimes getting onto any of the Yahoo personal sites (geocities). I think it must be an extremely busy "place" on the web, and at times it seems to take forever to load even the simplest page. Hope you try again and are successful.

Smiles, Eve

PS - Was pleased when I came back here to see that the links did come up highlighted and underlined. They hadn't been in the preview, and I thought I didn't know how to do something to make them "pop."

Nice sock. I have some long, warm and wooly worsted weight socks that I love for my field boots. Before I retired, I was out in the woods a good bit on forestry field trips etc and they kept my feet warm while also avoiding blisters by providing ample cushioning. I have knit several pair of heavy socks with Lopi for wearing with boots--my sons swear by them. Right now, though, I am wearing some warm but lighter weight socks that I knit - cozy! It is wet and cool and windy here today - time for creature comforts.

Why, thank you, Eve. I must admit, I love knitting (and wearing!) hand-knit socks. Keith doesn't like them, so I don't have to feel badly about knitting them only for me.

Eve, I finally got into the site and saw your sock. Congrats. It came out very well. Wear it well. (Will there be a mate? LOL)

don't worry about it. most newsreaders don't allow for multi- color or underline anyway. they'll recognize it's a clickable link :) very nice first sock! the little gap is very common, but not inevitable. you can make a little darn stitch to close it if it bothers you. after some practice it won't happen as much (unless you're distracted). what yarn did you use? it looks very cozy!

Hello again, y'all! This is really fun sharing and learning from/with y'all. :o)

Janise, glad you Geocities let you in when you tried again. Yes, there will be a mate .... it's cast on (that first round is SO hard for me!) and I got into other things yesterday so that I'm still on the less-than-half stage of the ribbing for the cuff.

Lee, I was pleased to see when I came back that the links were highlighted and underlined. I've no experience with newsreaders and so didn't realize that they don't show colors or underlines. Those are showing here in the Google display.

Thanks for the approval of my first sock attempt. I wouldn't have been able to follow the pattern if not for everybody here. :o) Thanks, too, for your suggestion about that gap. Katherine has suggested picking up an extra stitch there ... I'll just hafta figure out exactly where that is while the thing's in progress!! If I'm not successful at finding the right place, I'll surely be able to darn a stitch there like you suggested. :o)

Yes, it IS very cozy ... so I'm tempted to wear just the one around the house and switch feet as the other gets cold. LOL I used worsted weight (which I mis-spelled on the website!) Can't remember the brand

-- just had it laying here in a bag for years and would pick it up occasionally and see if my hands could tolerate crocheting again. I'm so pleased to be able to be making things again ... still miss crochet, but this is exciting and satisfying too. :o)

Smiles to y'all, Eve

Hi Eve,

Love the socks. Now maybe why your friends couldn't see your photos in your Yahoo album is you kept it private and not public. I learned how to make a album with the help of the great gals on here.
