OT Help! Gift suggestion

Sorry for the OT post but you all are so nice I was hoping you wouldn't mind. I lurk more than post but I'm desperate. Have received an invitation to a 90th birthday party for my sis-in-law's mother-in-law who will be arriving soon from England and I just don't have a clue what to get her. My sis-in-law is planning on doing a lap blanket for her so I don't really want to do another one but I'm at a total loss as to what I might get for this lovely lady and wondered if anyone might have any suggestions. Thanks so much.

Is she just here on a visit and then traveling back to England? If so, small and packable would be high on my list. I guess if I were knitting something, I would think about a scarf - at least you don't have to know a size and you could get it done is a short while. If all categories are open you might think about something that would be a nice reminder of the trip. If I was being creative I might take some pictures of the party, give her a special little book for them, and then supply her with the pics when printed. Now with digital cameras the printing could happen pretty quickly if the facilities are there - but even with a regular camera, it wouldn't take long. That way she could remember the party and even share it with people at home that won't be there. Just an idea. (I often look at the pictures a friendly person took of my mom's 90th - I was too busy that day to take pictures myself but am glad to have them.)

What about a shawl? Or a bed jacket. At her age, she probably would appreciate that, as she is of the generation who would actually have used one.

No, she's actually going to be staying now. She had a stroke several months ago while in England (York), is recovering nicely but wants to be with family who moved here years ago, so will be living out the remainder of her life here in the States.

If I was being creative I might take some

I lovelovelove this idea! I think this is what I'll do. Thanks so much.

Lindy a nice scarf of an exotic soft yarn, or a shawl. Find out what her favorite colours are and cast on, there are so many great scarf and shawl patterns about right now.

Good luck with your project.

Katherine you mentioned a bed jacket , i lately made a Shrug , for somebody who was taking care of a sick relative , i added a pocket ,and i think bed jackets also need a pocket ,,,, Speaking of pockets ,,, i made an aquaintance who sits a lot, a kind of side pocket[s] thing to hang opn the chair , so she can store her glasses, some tissues etc near her , and doesn`t have to rely on people bringing it to her . Another welcome present is a bag for holding your handwork , that has an added part , to bind it to your lap , as if it is an apron . Cellular phone bags [ which some people turned into glass bags, seem also to be very welcome. And last and not least , Herbal tea bags , and herbal soaps . and fruit.

Another present i forgot Cloth Bags , in all sizes with Shoulder long soft handles , I make them from cloth remanants of my sewing and art works, sometimes i adorn them with patches, insides can be of old used up shirts etc,,,

They are always welcome , people either shop with them [ they are foldable into yoyr `regular` bag, or use them to store things and hang on wall or in closet, they are washable etc.... mirjam

Yes, I thought about a shrug -like jacket. But the photo idea is very good, and more special! Aud ;-))

Hi Mirjam! That's really sweet of you to say. I'm a crocheter (learned from my grandmother years ago), although I do knit once in a while. I'm usually too busy with my projects to do much posting, ha ha! But I love reading you all and adore the friendship amongst this group. I'm leaning towards the photo thing but the other ideas are good ones also. The only problem with a shawl or scarf is that the weather here in central California is sooooo hot and I'm really worried about how Mary is going to adjust coming from cold/rainey England. Bless her heart, she is just the cutest thing. Thank you, everyone, for all of the ideas.

Hi Lindy,

How about a pair of light slippers as her feet may get a little cool even though it's hot in Calif, she won't be used to it. Also some stationary in case she wants to write letters to her friends back in England?
