sock heel flaps

I'm stitching my first sock and having a little trouble with the heel flap. The pattern I'm using is the free one from Lion Brand that comes with the Magic Stripes yarn. The directions are: Row 1 * Slip 1,k 1; rep from * Row 2 *Slip 1, p 1; rep from *

Do I slip the stitches knit wise or purl wise or do I alternate the slip on the rows? Also, is that second row right? I've looked on the internet and it seems that usually Row 2 is Slip 1, purl to the end.

I'm having a little trouble on the flap and it seems quite tight so any help is appreciated. Thanks! Katherine H

Slip purlwise so that when you purl back on the wrong side of the flap the stitches are mounted correctly on the needle with their right legs forward.

Yes. Its a variation call Eye of Partridge. On the wrong side you'll be purling the stitches you slipped on the previous right-side row, and you'll slip the stitches you knitted on the previous right-side row.

Alternatively you can slip the first stitch and purl across on the wrong sides. Slipping every first stitch on every row produces a nice tidy chain up the sides of the flap that'll make your life easier when you're ready to pick up the gussets.

Experimentation is wonderful. Try it both ways, decide which one you like better.

Thanks for the help! I was slipping knit wise and saw that they seemed twisted but purlwise seemed strange to do... I'm having fun trying socks for the first time. I think I can see why so many love them in the first place!

Hi, Katherine H! (first, welcome to RCTY!) (second, that was so GOOD of you to use Katherine H, as we already have a Katherine !! ~ I'm going to think of you as KatH, grin!) Wooly already answered your query, exactly as I would've, so won't bungle your mind with a repeat! Hugs, Noreen

Katherine,

I have used the same pattern several times. On the pearl side you only slip the first stitch and purl the rest. That is definitely your problem. On the knit side alternate slip 1, knit 1 all the way across, not on the purl side, just the first stitch is slipped.

I hope this helps.
