I just did a search on google for "Stola" as I had never heard the word before, and this (nothing like the lovely description from Els, unfortunately) is what I found...

Stola is an Italian word as well :-) Of course it comes from Latin, but in current Italian, apart a religious garnment (the scarf used by priests and bishops during Liturgy), is used to designate a shawl, the large rectangular scarf sort.
