I think dealing with teenage sex from the "don't do it because you could get pregnant" standpoint doesn't work. Girls don't believe they will get pregnant, or they fall for all sorts of mythology about it, or they are "so in love" they will risk it, or try some ineffective means of birth control--or even think that if they do, it will keep them and the boy together. To me, it is like saying "don't steal, because you'll go to jail". Because we all know that doesn't happen every time someone steals. And we all know people who get away with it.
Moral action should come from something more than fear of the consequences. It should come from positive principles--this is the standard I have for myself, this is what I believe about my responsbility towards others.
There are lots of consequences of sex besides the physical ones--it can change how you see yourself and how you are seen, how you treat yourself and how you treat others. It can put you into situations you are not mature enough to handle. It can make you less than the person you are capable of being if you do not respect yourself and others--and that applies to both boys and girls. Being properly informed and having access to birth control is important for both genders.
I'd like to know how and why males grow up thinking they're entitled to have whatever they want, including sex! I heard of a village in this country where the boys thought the girls might have HIV, so they were regularly having sex with goats! The woman who owned the goats was very upset, and didn't know how to stop them.
If we all taught our boys (as well as the girls) that restraint and self-discipline was a very important part of growing up, there might be some chance. When my children were young, I told my son that if his sisters became pregnant it would be our problem, but if he got a girl pregnant we would not be able to protect him from the consequences, which could even be a shot-gun marriage! This was before Hiv, of course.
Trish, you put it all very well, and I wish we could prevent our girls'having too little self-esteem, and so becoming victims of boys' sexual urges. I saw the Oprah show you mention, and wondered how those girls could think of putting their mouths anywhere near the boys' dirty parts! I've always said if any male tried to put his penis in my mouth, he'd never be able to do it again, to anyone!
I dunno. My mother always knew when I was up to something, and my father assured me that if I was up to THAT something, he'd kill me.
I was also intelligent enough to know that even the most-effective birth control method has a 1% failure rate, and that my luck is such that I would be that 1%. Doesn't matter whether the 1% is a good thing (getting a scholarship) or a bad thing (pregnancy without benefit of clergy), I know that I'm going to be the one who beats the odds.
It must be fabulous to have such intelligence and self esteem. Unfortunately I believe that's unusual for far too many teens who just want to be accepted by their peers.
As far as mothers knowing when their kids are up to something, it was nearly impossible in my day when my parent's worked all day and came home to household chores and it's probably even harder today with working parents, most of the kids having cars and lots of freedom to do as they please.
Wouldn't it be better if you tried to instill positive ideas into them from the time they're little and maybe prevent some problems?
This right here is part of the problem. Why do we assume that girls are the victims of boys' sexual urges? I never had any trouble dealing with boys' urges. It was my own that threatened to get me into trouble and according to the way I was raised, I wasn't even supposed to have them.

Well, we started this conversation from the agreed point that there are many parents who don't have a clue what their kids are doing. Mine had not a clue--the cultural gap between their youth and mine didn't even allow them to imagine. ("If I ever find out you are smoking dope".....well, they never found out. And smoking doesn't preclude sniffing, snorting, shooting, dropping etc.) I never assumed I knew either. And I never threatened to kill anyone--still don't, even in jest.
Kids have to be given a moral compass, not just a set of rules, because things will always come up that their parents' rules do not anticipate. They need something to make that decision with. Respect for yourself and others is one good starting point. "Don't get pregnant" leaves an awful lot of open territory.

Yebbut! What are we debating here, geographical distinctions, cultural ones or ethnic ones? Roughly 95% of Australians aren't technically Australian either!
Yebbut, ya just put yer finger on it. Some people are confusing geography and ethnicity. Places like Australia and Canada are easy to locate geographically. Canada is a big pink blob that you can see from Sarah Palin's house. And I am a Canadian, because I was born here, have citizenship, and ally myself with this country and no other. But that says nothing about my ethnicity. Canadians (like Australians) have all kinds of eyes and all colours of skin, because people have come to our countries from all over the world. We are not an ethnic group, and our census forms still include "Canadian" only as an option for "ethnic origin", although it is open to Canadians of any ethnicity to choose it. We are very close to pretty ugly territory here by classifying people by race. Instead of drawing lines, we should be extending hands.
