Adrenaline and Bloodpressure.

Aug 23, 2003 15 Replies

I spent nearly the last lyear in "fight or flight" mode. I thin it is extraordinary how my beadwork looks calm and not like the sleep deprived high bloodpressure woman I was. Now you have to understand, I am pretty laid back, an old hippie, and don;t cotten to drugs for the most part. Im one of those who would rather eat oatmeal to get rid of cholesterol, getthe picture ? So when the doctors were trying to convince me that the BP problem was a problem I'd have till the end of life and I had to take med for it, I wasn't happy. Not that someone who does have to take it, is rong. For me it wan't. It goes against every last thing I hold up as important ..... I do not like docs & meds. i always see that there might be dome natural way to improve this ..... the meds created problems of their own that went against my better judgement. I was also sleep deprived. That is a life long thing with me. My mom has it too. What to do ... what to do .... I was getting fed up with the docs putting me in the pigeonhole of , plump and over 50=chemical control of myself. So whilst I was explaining myself to one of the 4 docs I dumped this year, because they won't listen, I decided to stop taking every med and move on. The side effects worst than the BP. And I did. My solution for BP "problem" ? Remove the stress from your life, On the day I decided I had had enough, I sat quietly, and gave it up. It also helped that I gave up my p.i.t.a. job and settled my finances ..... Purely from my standpoint, in my situation, my BP was 190/100 for almost the last year, and for the last week, it has been 120something / 60something. This wouldn't work for everyone. I know. But I can tell you the exact moment when it plunged, and I can tell you I feel wonderful today. My head isn't pounding, There must be something to this lack of stress stuff, huh ? And I am not in flight or fight mode, and I am not agitated. Adrenaline is pretty low, too ...... The only reason I am putting this up here is that I hope someone out there who is in high stress mode sees this and understands that the solution is real. Everthing "they" say about stress removal is truer than any drug ... it works. You just have to be willing to pull the plug on stress and give it up, really give it up. The side effects from all those chemicals is something I personally could not live with ! I feel so bad for those of you that have a physiological problem and have to use them. Rainbow

You better believe it... nothing takes a worse toll on your health and resilience than chronic stress.

You said it--stress is bad for you. More stress flowing in than you can get rid of daily eats away at you severely. Sarajane

Yup.

Your body actually wants to be healthy and will most likely react by moving in the correct direction if you give it real nourishment, respect and care. That respect and care aspect especially includes losing any unneccesary stressors. Stress is the biggest life-destroyer I know of.

I'm glad to see that you're doing so much better :)

yep. and IF the stress goes away, after being present for a long time, be prepared to catch every cold and flu bug in the area. according to an MD i knew, when the stress goes away, the immune system shuts down for a much-needed rest.

I often wonder if all the years of going a mile a minute, being superwoman, is at least partially to blame for the health problems I'm experiencing now. It's like being a race car that never gets a pit stop -- eventually, something's gotta give, and you'll end up needing repair.

Not that my enforced vacation is any less stressful. :-p

Um, Kathy, I think that's called "Type A" which has been documented in men for stress-related diseases for years. Relaaaaaaax. (Yeah, easier said than done!)

My Mom had an MI at age 52. She was totally surprised, until the doctor sat down with her and asked her to "explain your life" for the past 5 years. That included a major warehouse fire for our business, the deaths of her father and sister-in-law, me finishing high school, a court battle for our business as part of a class action suit, and early menopause for her. Oh, plus the usual mom stuff and working full time in our business with my Dad. Not exactly Donna Reed.

Interesting. And does it then bounce back after a while?

Deirdre

I think I'd say a tentative 'yes' to this. And if you have it available in your local library system, I suggest that you view Episode 3 of the Bill Moyers series on Healing and the Mind.

It addresses how to unearth a better quality of life ... by de-stressing, and focusing in the present ... even when you are in chronic pain of the kind that doesn't actually respond to traditional treatment.

The whole series is good, but that is my favorite episode. I always find it moving to watch the particpants who start in a state of suffering and frustration ... become more at peace, and able to relax with what is ... even though they still hurt, and maybe always will.

yes, it does. but at first, you may have NO idea why you are suddenly sick all the time, just because the stress is gone.

IME, experiential learning is the best and the most vivid.

I understand all of your 'lessons', and am glad they came to you by way of good outcomes you didn't expect.

]It -would- be terribly confusing, and counter-intuitive.

i was lucky enough to have a physician at the time who asked a LOT of questions, not just did an exam. and a boss who was concerned enough to insist i see a doctor.

yes. and that was almost 35 years ago. it's probably less likely to happen now. it didn't hurt that i was 19, cute, and on my own for the first time in my life. both the doctor and the boss were "substitute parenting", i think!

Well, they did what seems entirely reasonable to me. Paying positive attention pays off for everyone involved, IMO.
