illusion necklaces

Since I buy my own beads, it's a hardship to *my* wallet! But I salvaged this one; turns out I had a few citrine rondelles (left over from another project) that could substitute for the "pineapple quartz". The rest of the necklace is salmon-pink coral and amazonite, with a mixed "cherry/pineapple quartz" pendant. It looks like a tropical sunset!

From now it will be a hardship to my wallet too. If I don't sell, I don't buy and that's that. Lucky for me I had two custom necklaces to make and sell.

Your necklace sounds dreamy! Can we see?

]mixed "cherry/pineapple quartz"

sorry - i have to ask. is it quartz or glass?

i avoided one dealer at the gem show when i saw a label that said "cherry quartz". the gem club swears it is EXTREMELY rare.

and now i'm confuzzled again.

Vickie,

I've seem strawberry natural quartz, but it's nothing at all like the Cherry Quartz. or Pineapple Quartz glass beads. Just think in terms of rose quartz, and if its qualities are a lot different, you can be pretty sure it's not any natural stone.

yes - thanks! the rose quartz and cherry "quartz" were side by side on the table - and there was a noticeable difference.

just making sure i'm not losing "it". some of the rock/gem club members are fascinated by what we discuss here. now, if i could just get some of them online!

I'd love to get the rock authorities to come on-line and contribute.

so would i! i keep trying. most of them, however, don't even have e-mail. and i suspect they might have a hard time wading through a lot of the OT stuff [that's NOT a complaint - just an observation]

there are a couple of geologists in the group and some incredibly knowledgeable amateurs.

i'm still hoping to go on some of their field trips - if they have one close enough to not involve camping!

That's why I had it in quotes. "Cherry quartz", "pineapple quartz", and "blueberry quartz" are all trade names for different colors of a manmade glass stone. The pendant I used in this necklace has some of *both* the pink and the light yellow swirly stuff in it.

Now, I do have a necklace, bought about 10 years ago, which was sold to me as "cherry quartz". It does not look ANYTHING like the stone currently being sold under that name; it's opaque and so dark I initially thought it was garnet. I have been given to understand that this *is* a natural, and very rare, coloration of quartz, related to the process that makes rose quartz. That may be what your gem & mineral club is talking about.

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, here's another trade name to watch out for: "Candy Jade". It's cool-looking stuff, lovely mixtures of color within the same stone. I've seen it in white/green/purple, white/pink/light green, white/yellow/orange, red/orange/dark green, and several other color schemes.

This stuff is no more "jade" than I'm Chinese! Some of it appears to be dyed serpentine, from the look and feel; this would fit with the common practice of calling solid-color dyed serpentine "New Jade".[1] Some of it, as far as I can tell, is just plain opaque glass. So buy it and use it if you want to, but don't let anyone tell you that it's really jade.

[1] IMO this is the best use for serpentine. In its natural state it is a butt-ugly stone that doesn't go with anything else! Dyeing it opens up a whole range of possibilities.

Speaking of which, Frederick's of Hollywood has a number of non-Swarovski-made items which they describe as being made with "Swarovski crystals" among other components.
