Also, I just want to say one more thing.... I think there's a big difference in giving someone constructive criticism on the quality and technical aspects of their work (bead holes, shaping, stringer control, etc.) and criticising their actual artistic design, as people are doing with Julie. I'd rather say something like "I don't prefer those colors or that design". If her beads weren't well done and technically up to par, I might feel better about some of the things said. Slightly. But her beads are very well done and technically pretty much flawless.

Um I think? I believe my server has some of these messages out of order and I be confused. (What else is new?!) I am all for bead artists making money, the more the better because that means they'll buy more glass and fuel for the torch and hopefully fuel for their creativity and make the world a more beautiful place...one bead at a time.

I am so sorry I ever brought that auction to the attention of the group. I just thought it was cool that a fellow lampworker was getting such a good price for her work. Seeing a focal bead get such high bids makes me feel really good about the market. I never imagined there would be negative comments. Silly me.

Stupid response and comment on my part - but true -- and hypercritical on this end is my reason..... why ? because I'm weird.... LOL I make things like that - and consider them "experimental" -- and if they don't turn out exactly like I WANTED them to - then I think that they are "duds." I know, I know ... the old saying is - "one man's trash is another's treasure." but I often can't convince myself of that....

I have had people come to my house and "ohh and ahhh" over my "junk and experiments pile" -- which I gladly let them carry away.

I know - dumb me -- but if a bead isn't "me" or I don't particularly like it "myself" - I often won't keep or sell it....

-- so it was an honest statement that I throw away beads that don't turn out the way I expect--and are a bit on the "odd" or "unusual" side -- and i've done things "like that" ... and thought "nope" ....and the go in the "experiment" pile... (which often ends up in the trash - or given to some young kids of a friend of mine - who call them the "treasure stash.")

TRUE STORY- and perfect example... Last weekend - my oxygen tank was low - I knew it too... but I worked on a really gorgeous heart bead... pink opal center, cased with pink and stringers of purple, gold and czech candycane filigrana.... as I've just finished casing it - - I start to lose the flame - quickly I shape the heart - but I know (sinkingly) I am losing the O2 balance in the torch - and I see the glass smoke. The next day - it's a slightly smoky heart... My best friend comes over

- sees it on the bench and snatches it up "OH GOD this is soo cool!" "NO it isn't ....." I snap - :it's no good, it got smoked.: "But I love it" she says "it's mysterious, I love the smoky effect" LOL So - I let her take it home.... today - she told me her son and daughter in law thought it was cool too. see - perfect example.... a "bad" heart to me was really "cool" to them. Ok - I'm sorry what I said came out the wrong way - but it's the truth --- I throw away beads that others might like -- because they AREN'T WHAT I LIKE OR INTENDED..... And - I've tried to do orange beads with foil work - and threw them away.. sorry - SAD BUT TRUE. you want me to send you the boo boos?? LOL

I never criticized her beads -- I think they are very well done - I liked the first one that got posted... the "lantern" style - it's very unique....

they are -- but yeah - I guess my gut reaction to the orange one was "not my style!" (see my other post) which is why if I had made it - even if it had been "technically perfect" - I would never have sold it... dumb huh???? Her beads are VERY NICE THOUGH - there is no denying that...

This is what I said before. The scanner doesn't flatter them -- it gives a seriously green cast to all the beads, for one thing. >

I'm aware of that problem right now... I've only have that problem since I bought the new computer. and can't seem to solve it... Did fine BEFORE I got the new computer... anybody have an idea WHY??? I have the SAME SCANNER -- but the new computer and new scanning program (Adobe) are putting that darn cast in there (as well as poorer quality picture than I was getting before) and I can't GET RID OF IT. In my old program I didn't HAVE That PROBLEM, and could get good crisp color... It is driving me insane - and I don't have a near term solution - I cannot afford to buy any new expensive equipment - i am flat broke - tuition is due

-and I don't even have enough money to make the bills this month... So - I'm just having to make do. Maybe I can beg my dad to loan me his digital camera for a day or two - and see if I can get better results....

Yes - the discerning bead collector often has a lot of money and they don't mind spending it on beads!>

BEEN THERE - done that I dropped over $800 in ONE DAY on other people's lampwork.. yessireee.... Art's Afire in Alexandria Virgina..... however - I didn't pay more than $125 for the most expensive of the batch... and it's a HUGE and complex bead that probably took the artist 2 or three hours to make....

Art is a corroboration between artist and media. Some of my best work has occurs when the material has taken a hand in the formation. If something is differnt from your anticipation, just consider it a hand from Good.

I've never gotten over $75 for a single lampwork creation in my seven years. Does that mean my beads suck?? I don't think soooooo

I've never gotten money like she is getting for that bead.... even for some of my fantastically GOOD WORK.

That last Blue Salome (the one on the front of my webpage right now) was a fantastic beauty. She took me over an hour and a half to create....working in boro -on a hot torch.

She is ART... not just a piece of colored glass....

What was she really worth --?

On the WEST COAST - in a gallery - probably four to SIX TIMES what I got for her here in Ohio...

yes - she sold for a mere $75... and that was grudgingly ...

Personally, I feel that she was really worth $200.... but I don't have "THE NAME" and I don't have the buyers.

So - just because this person has "a name" on ebay - she is getting $200 plus for a soft glass bead.... that maybe took her 20 minutes to make??

OK - YES - it DOES make me feel bad........ If Corina gets that for a SET - do I feel bad? NO WAY - she worked a damn long time on that set (the black and white one... and it's worth every penny!!!! -regardless of her name... those are stunning beads that required a lot of work and skill.

but $225 for "A" bead.... one that is not particularly demanding for that particular artist....????? no- it makes me very confused.....

I STILL CANNOT understand it....

Kathy -- thanks for noticing. She reappeared one hour into my drive to CA. I felt like I had "my" life back. Things have been feeling real good since. I am so grateful for that, it made me cry to write it.
