Julie has done it again!!!

There are people who double the retail price, and I had to get OK with that because people have to make enough money to stay in business. Then there are people who triple the retail price, and I had to get OK with that. Because that is another acceptable business formula -- triple is supposed to make you OK, according to time honored wisdom. I can't find fault with people who are trying to be OK. I just don't have to buy it, at that price.

And then there are people who know darned well that a bead or pendant is worth about exactly one dollar. Because they have been buying and reselling in the market for years. And although that piece is worth $1, and can be bought elsewhere for $1, this person sells it for $24. Because she thinks she can, and someone buys it, confirming that belief for her. Here, we have someone who is taking our system of free market value and ripping the roof off it. Some things are fair, some things are honest and some are just ridiculous. I find this seller and her beads to be the latter. I have bought from her; I know. I wanted to check it out and make sure I wasn't all pissed off over nothing, LOL. I was right. I got ripped. I could have gotten the SAME beads at my LBS, who is one who triples the retail price, for 1/2 of what I paid from this woman. Hear me -- the tripled price was 1/2 LESS than what I paid. There is a point at which that is over the top. And, don't care what anyone else thinks of it. That is just my opinion.

And all the work and skill that it took to develop her skills. I'm not sure if I am saying that right, but one of the things I admire about her is that she is not trying out new techniques on the Ebay public without perfecting them first. She practices until she gets it the way she wants, and it shows. Oh, yeah, I totally agree. I went to a local LBS who was charging easily 4 times the amount of money for beads that I could have bought at other LBS's. And of course cheaper online. It made me wonder how they could stay in business, but they obviously do. Plus the salesperson was really rude. Just makes me shake my head. I spent about 5 minutes in the store - confirming my initial reaction to prices, then left after talking to the saleperson. I will never go back, and I will never recommend the store to others. When someone's selling a Swarovski 4mm bicone with no coating in a basic color for 65 cents, you know somthing's amiss. Especially because the same exact bead is being sold at another LBS in a nicer part of town for 15 cents.

about your peers behind their backs just makes you look unprofessional. <

She is not talking about them behind their backs...she's saying it right out loud in front of everyone. And you are so right, it makes her look unprofessional and terribly jealous.

Cheryl, I don't have any of you beads, and in all likelihood, I won't. Not because of your pouting, but because, as Sooz pointed out, your pictures don't do it for me. They are not detailed and highlighted in anyway that show them to their best advantage...at least based on what Sooz has to say. And it appears that she has actually had the opportunity to actually see them. I haven't.

Kandice is right on another point...if you want to become a name, work to become one. Effective marketing is not easy, and not necessarily inexpensive. If you want it done right, you have to be intimately involved, even if you have a rep, or a copywriter or.... I know that when I was in law school, I had precious little time after classes, studying and silversmithing a bit to even think about marketing my stuff in a way that would provide payback.

Here are some words from Sister Maria Kathleen, my 4th grade teacher; easy to say, not so easy to live by, even 35 years later:

Do not be jealous of others' talents and abilities. Do not compare yourself to others. Some will be lesser and some will be greater.

Good luck with everything.

Your talent is awesome, Cheryl! I have some of the most beautifully crafted beads by you and the picture was actually pretty good but still the beads are so much better in real person.

Well, you know how it is... sometimes something just gets declared "it" (Beanie Babies come to mind) and people HAVE to have them. Her beads are beautiful and unusual... I don't see anything out there quite like them... and her pictures are VERY good, and she's just been declared "it".

May each of us have our turn!

I think you could get higher prices with better pictures, to tell the truth. I'm not sure what you're using, but I don't think it does your beads justice at all... but, OTOH, I know digital cameras are expensive, and that you're a law student! :)

Yes... if people aren't in a tizzy over the low prices, they're slamming someone for getting high ones. Why is this?

I personally think it kicks ass that her beads are going for such prices, and I think it benefits all lampworkers *and jewelrymakers* when people see lampwork as an "expensive" item.

That's a good question. I'm happy that some of the folks are getting what they deserve for their art. It makes me feel that someday, maybe, if I'm good and keep at it I might get those prices....someday. Until then, rock on girls and guys, rock on!

Cheryl, I've never gotten more than $25 for a single bead, ever. I'm not saying that mine are as nice as yours, but I'll tell you, I work really hard on them... and it doesn't hurt my feelings in the least when I see someone else getting higher prices. Why would it? Now, if they were getting higher prices copying my beads, I'd be pissed. :)

Most of my smaller beads sell for $7-$8 apiece, and I feel pretty good about it. I also feel great when a focal sells for $20-$25. I do the best I can and I think it shows in my work, and I think people are giving me a great compliment by being willing to pay that much for them. If one of my focals went for $75, I'd wet myself... but I don't spend that long on them, rarely more than half an hour.

I dunno. I don't think, for a current example, that Corina's beads, while beautiful, are so spectacularly head-and-shoulders above everyone else's that it alone explains the high prices she commands, but I recognize that she is an excellent teacher and has made a name for herself through her writing, and the hard work she put into her teaching projects, including her book, is reflected in her incredible auction prices. It's possible that at some time in the future, the craze for her beads will wane, and that she then, while actually *better* than she is now, might not command as high a premium. And she may see some young upstart getting the high prices then, but we'd have to ask her whether that would make her feel bad.

I'm rambling, and I'm sorry. I guess I'm just trying to say that one person getting high prices doesn't mean everyone else's beads suck. It's not an insult.
