I'm finally finished with the kokoshnik, and have uploaded a few photos. I also took some clearer pictures of the crystal kimono, and have them in the same album. If you'd like, take a look at:

Speechless. Although -- If you were a married lady in Old Russia (or an SCA geek), you probably *wouldn't* feel silly wearing it. :-)

I'd comment, but I'm speechless!

Actually, if I knew someone who was involved in the SCA, I'd consider making a kokoshnik for them. I still have plenty of materials, and likely it would go a lot faster once I knew what I was doing.
But I don't know anyone in the SCA, and I have a bridal headpiece to make, so I'll pass on making more kokoshniki for now. :-)

Insert incredulous expletive here!!
Holy freaking cow, Kathy!!

Wow! How very cool! We have a Russian folk festival here...you would look smashing if you showed up wearing that!
And....your crystal kimono is just as wonderful!
Have you considered sharing these pieces with one of the bead mags? I think other beaders would also love to see your work.
Going back for look #3 now...=o) Beki

OH HOW WONDERFUL The color is yummy -- and I love the netting design you used... It is really beautiful....
You know -- sometimes I think in our modern "simplified" times - we've lost out on some of the fun of getting "all dressed up" I think it would have been a lot more fun to get all dressed up in those days... if you were a well to do lady...
instead of just Reeboks, slacks and a sweater today.. LOL

You're welcome to borrow it. However, I suggest you wear a neck brace, as the thing is darned heavy. :-) DD tells me that it doesn't feel anywhere is as heavy when worn as when you're holding it. Probably because the back and the front are equally weighted. (They had to be, or the headpiece collapses
- guess how I found out?)
Glad you like it. That one is my mother's favorite.
Ya think? I just share them here, because my friends are so supportive. I don't think my stuff is anywhere near the quality of some of the stuff I see in the magazines - I keep thinking of that insanely difficult loomed piece of a chicken all done in 22/0 and 24/0 beads. I don't make anything near that calibre.

The color was a recommendation from Arondelle, I think. She told me that the Russian words for "red" and "beautiful" were very similar. She also recommended that I read the book "Embroidery of All Russias," which gave me a terrific glimpse into the mindset of the women who created these items.
I love to imagine myself in the shoes of the people who originally made these things of beauty. Of course, they probably weren't thinking "Oh crap, I stabbed my darned finger again."
When I was in my early twenties, my grandparents insisted on buying me a complete German dirndl ensemble. Not the plain kind that you sometimes see here, but the heavily embroidered kind with a tatted lace underblouse. Along with it came the white stockings, the shoes, the special necklace, etc. etc.
The outfit was/is incredible. I felt like a princess when I wore it. Of course, it's a size 3, and my size 3 days are long behind me. And poor DD has her father's body type, so she'll never be able to wear it. On the good side - I had a very similar costume when I was ten, and I had kept it in good condition. DD wore it when she was six, and looked adorable. My grandparents had no idea I had saved it, and were so happy when they got the photos.
Shoes? No, no, shoes are only for if you're leaving the house. Otherwise, socks, sweats and my Oscar the Grouch tee shirt today.

The china and the crystal were wedding gifts from my grandparents, who got it from the factory that Opa helped rebuild after the war. It's not going anywhere. However, Bob has promised that we will go shopping next week for a glass etagere to display all these projects.
Fortunately, he has no idea just how many projects I have on the list. If I get them all finished, we're going to need a display case that covers a whole wall. (heh, heh, heh)

Awesome. And the kimono is beautiful too
Holy cow!!!! I don't know what to say! Kathy, you are amazing!
Bravo Kathy! It's even more beautiful than all your wonderful written accounts. Okay, I'm not glad someone said to wrap your chair with pillows so when I fell out I was okay.
Kathy,
I have no idea why you don't think your pieces are worthy of the magazines. Hell, I think they are museum quality and I'm picky about art.

I can't wait to see the project wall...but I won't mention anything to DH.
