OT: Hurricane Frances

Has there been any word from our fellow beaders in Florida? I know there are widespread power outages but perhaps cell phones can get through...???

I haven't heard from my best friend in three days. I hope that she is okay but with the power outages and mayhem it might be a while before we can contact each other.

I don't know about Fla., but Frances has reached us, here in Ga! My poor dogs won't even go off the porch this morning!

Tallahassee pretty much escaped unscathed. Some flooding and power outages in some parts of the city, but in our area, it was hurry up and wait for nothing.

Bimy your web site is great. Your work and ideals stir my spirit. If I ever find a lampwork class, I look forward to making my own little wonders.

I have a roof and I can't believe it! And no missing shingles either. I could just kiss the guys that built this house! The storm stalled with the eye wall right over us. We got slammed with the worst wind the storm had to offer for four straight hours! The walls shook, and it sounded like a freight train passing through my living room. I was terrified, and with each gust, I just knew the roof was going to lift right off, but it stayed. Brian's Mom's mobile home has no damage at all, his grandparents have a missing awning and the window was broken. Trailers all around them were destroyed. My parents mobile home had damage to the carport roof only. They are all going in today to check things out, but that's all the damage that could be seen from the outside. We had our power right up until 11:30 that night as the eye was approaching, and got it back about two hours ago. Being in the eye is such an unbelievable experience. No wind at all and no rain. Just a column of perfect weather with a very weird smell. The bad part is, after the eye, the wind blows in the opposite direction, so we got slammed from the front and the back. I almost lost my big Maine Coon Winston to the heat. He became delirious and couldn't stand or walk, and would growl at me. As soon as Brian cranked up the generator I got a fan on him and a cold rag on his head and he came back around. The heat causes the tumors in his head to inflame and press on his brain. That's why I can't let him stay out on the porch too long if it's warm outside. That whole thing scared me worse than the storm. And now we're expecting another one by the end of the week. I feel fortunate to have fared so well in this one, but how many times can we be lucky? Here's a few pics.

That was too damn close for comfort, Dawn. I am so relieved to hear you guys and your family made it through okay. Can I suggest getting some ice packs (the re-freezable kind) and placing them under a light cover , like a pillowcase, in a doggie bed for Winston? You have got to keep that poochie cool. I hope he does better from now on.

The poochie is a kitty. :-)

We had a Maine Coone as well.

I _knew_ that! Why did I type poochie? Oh wait--it might have had something to do with Darian singing Poochie Coochie in my ear all morning. Don't ask.

LOL! Thanks Candace. That's actually a great idea. I will never let that happen again! I was a little preoccupied with all the people here and didn't realize it had gotten so hot in my walk-in closet where both kitties were hiding.

and speaking of coochie....=oO...I have a tiny fan under my lampworking bench, blowing straight up at me. My neighbor, (a 70ish year old man) asked why I had it down there and I told him it was my "Hoochie Coochie Cooler!" I don't think I've ever seen someone turn so many shades of red! LOL! I don't suppose he'll be asking anymore dumb questions.

I was thinking about this. How about putting kitty in a cat/dog carrier, one of the plastic ones, along with some frozen "blue ice" cooler things. If it's already too late to freeze things, putting a damp towel over the cage and running the fan over the wet-but-wrung out towel will lower the air temperature by quite a bit. Even a little battery operated fan would help.

A better solution would be something called a "Body Cooler Pet Mat." It's a pet mat filled with gel that absorbs a ton of water and releases it slowly, to keep the pet cool. The cat won't get wet - it's waterproof on the pet side. You might find one for less money, but this is the basic idea:

Highly recommended for anyone with a pet who is sensitive to heat. The site also carries clothing for pets, made of the same material, but after a childhood experience trying to dress a cat, I can't say I recommend putting a heavy, wet, jacket on a Maine Coon Cat. Thanks Cheryl,

I do feel so fortunate. There are so many without homes, and so many homes without power. We loaned out our generator as soon as we got our power back. It's no fun camping out in your own house.

I'm also thinking that the pressure from the storm could have played a role in Winston's incident. It's not like it was sweltering hot. And I don't think the lion cut would go over very well with him as he gets embarrassed very easily. But I surely would have dunked him in water had the fan not brought him around. He's doing real good now though. He just had a midnight snack and he's happily chillin' in his little muse hut here in the studio.

And the last time I saw Frances, she was headed up in your direction. Did you get some bad weather from it too? My husband Brian is from Youngstown.
