OT: I need some advice

Starlia, I strongly suggest you read at least the parts of Jerri Nielsen's book which deal with what it's actually like living in Antarctica ...

I can do that. I know Antarctica is much worse than Alaska but I do know what it's like at 80 below. :-)

And for me SFO is middle Calif, and Northern Calif starts by Bill and Cathy's near the Woodland cut-off.

Oh, I didn't leave it off. I just needed some sleep.

Starlia -- well, my dear, just for the record I thought you handled it like a champ. I would have told those people to take a flying leap off the side of something, LOL, but you were so polite. Makes me like you even more.

I have several bugs up my ass, it seems, but a big one is people telling me how to live my life. Even before I had any self-actualization, or liked myself enough to stand up for my own beliefs, I used to sing the first line to a Barbara Streisand song, "DON'T tell me how to live..." It is the beginning of "Don't Rain On My Parade." People telling me how to live just piss me off, LOL. Even when I wasn't doing such a good job of it on my own, it still just pissed me off. Just for the record, should you come to California to visit the ranch, I am NOT going to do this. LOL. I have my reputation to protect!

(Sooz offered to eat crackers in bed with me when a relationship broke up one time, and I can do that. But touching you is out of the question.)

Tide pools and dog beach. We used to take our dog there every weekend. He loved it. Of course the SD zoo. One of the finest in the country. And Balboa Park. And Old Town. Excellent restaurants there.

But that's back up in LA. There used to be a big area between San Diego and LA that was all citrus and strawberry farms. Now it's all housing. Yuck. But LA, many museums, science, history art. Go up to Pasadena. One of the finest art museums in the state is located there. Seeing the Rose Parade in person is a must. As is working on an actual parade float. When you step into the tent or building where it's being built, the scent from all those flowers knocks you over. It's like going to heaven. Look down at the Rose Bowl from the streets above the arroyo. Go to Griffith Park and see the observatory. Lay back in the park and soak up the vibes from all the love-ins in the 60's. Go to Arcadia (just outside Pasadena) and see the Los Angeles Arboretum. Peacocks everywhere. Go during mating season, the males will be strutting their stuff all over! The red and white cottage from Fantasy Island is on the grounds. It was actually built by Lucky Baldwin for his bride. She didn't stick around long. Steinbeck reportedly stayed on the grounds there awhile and wrote... Go across the street and see the Santa Anita race track. You might remember it from Seabiscuit....

Go in the early spring, late fall or winter. Not in the summer! Go to Amargosa and see the Amargosa Opera House. It's a tiny desert town in the middle of nowhere. The Opera House was purchased by a dancer and her husband. They painted the inside to look like it has a balcony filled with people in old European dress, inc. the king and queen. The ceiling is painted to look like it's draped velvet with a big chandelier.

Kings Canyon is often overlooked, and worth seeing.

There is an annual Ramona play held in Hemet CA. It tells the whole story. It's really fun to go see. Held in a big outdoor amphitheater. Take a run up into the mountains from Hemet in the desert and see Idewild (I'm probably misspelling a lot of this, its been years....). Stay up there forever, or at least until it snows.

And the Santa Barbara botanical gardens! And all of the missions.

Be prepared to gain several pounds while there. Also be aware that a good many tee shirt and imported crap shops have opened in Solvang. Avoid them. Maybe they will rot from neglect.

Go camping at Pismo Beach. Get up early in the AM. The beach will be covered with sand dollars. Go on up to Moonstone Beach. Watch the sea otters in the kelp beds. There are no actual moonstones there, but lots of interesting pebbles on the beach. There is a jade mine just up the coast. Many small pieces of jade tumble ashore there. I have about 50 small stones I picked up last time I was there. I tumbled them to a high gloss, maybe I'll actually use them someday. So pretty, hate to part with them...

So right you are. That trip was a bit of a blur.. La Brea is in LA. I must have been mentally avoiding the cities when I made that goof.

Thanks for sharing Calif, too. And you know, Annaheim was a Spanish land grant to a Dane hence the name.

I left out Palm Springs, too. My Dad used to gas up there in the 1920s, when the gas station was the only building there. He became a teamster when he was working on the roads with a*mule team* at 13; would have been 1918 or

1920. After that he drove truck in Southern Calif and Mexico.

I hope my comments were not construed as telling Starlia what to do. I personally couldn't take off like that - but that's just me. I have a short umbilical cord. ;-) I just want Starlia to be happy.

Not at all. I know my sister hates to travel and loves to stay close to home. It's just my make up. My mother was a traveler and I hope that's all I got from her other than my snub nose.

And to Barbara's wonderful travelogue, I add:

Mohave Desert.

I am new to the sights of CA, but in driving through it I was reminded of Independence Day where people were living in trailers in the desert, waiting for the mothership to arrive and take them home? I actually saw a pink trailer in the desert. Little pockets of people living out in the middle of NOWHERE with a capital everything, LOL.

Starlia, check out the Lonely Planet for Antarctica. I got mine 4 or 5 years ago when the University here was mapping Antarctica using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar).

Becki,

I swear I'm about ready to pack up and come out. I'm waiting for my truck to get fixed. My brakes are dead and DH hasn't had the time to fix them yet.

Starlia,

After reading Becki's quote "don't rain on my parade" in a previous post, I got out my own *don't tread on me* song - a Bessie Smith recording of T'ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do - as well as some other Uppity Blues Women songs. And as I was reading the lines you posted with these songs also going thru my head, I couldn't help but think wow, these would make great lyrics for an Uppity Blues Beaders song!

Mérci. I've moved on to Ray Charles now, and your phrasing and sentiments would be perfect additional verses for his *Busted* - another concept familiar to most beaders LOL.
