OT - Oh dear lord my car :(

OK, I have known for a while that my car needed work. It goes through transmission fluid like there's no tomorrow, the asphalt in my parking spot is stained from leaking oil, the radiator hose sprung a leak, and a major hint was when the muffler fell off on I-5. Compared to all that, the antenna falling off was a minor annoyance.

We're expecting our tax refund this week, so we took the car in... $1500 worth of work. Minimum.

Goodbye, dreams of bunk beds and backyard playsets... goodbye, thoughts of home improvement... goodbye, fantasies of paying off credit cards... hello, car.

Oh man, my sympathies! I had a "noise" for over a year, then started leaking transmisison fluid, then finally the noise got worse. Our lovely vacation to New Mexico last year was aborted just east of Flagstaff, and we ended up having to replace the transfer case (like the transmission, but costs more). Arrrgh!

It's so tough, when your car gets to that stage, to decide whether to take the plunge and replace the damned thing, or just to persevere. I still have my Jeep. It will probably die in the desert and take me with it before I come to my senses. LOL

Kalera: Every day when I get into my car, I say a prayer to God/ess that it hangs on. I really love my car, it's a 92 LeBaron ragtop, only has 110K miles on it, but is leaking oil.

I have been living on art sales, subbing and life coaching for 3 years since I was laid off from corporate, and if I have to buy a car, I will seriously have to think about returning to corporate.

I feel for ya.

Have you looked at freecycle.net or craigslist.org for things..bunk beds and playsets?

I just got the most beautiful armoire from freecycle here in Massachusetts. It is amazing the kinds of things people give away so as to not create more landfill.

I'm so sorry you didnt get to do something more fun with your refund. Its a vicious cycle. You have to have a car to get to work, you gotta work to keep the car running. *unless you live close to mass trans or can walk, of course* Diana

NOW, he says he didn't do it! and my car probably isn't worth $1500 total. i just keep hoping i can keep it on the road, because i'm MILES from everything!!!

**HUGS** i know how you feel - honest!

You did file an accident report, right? If you did, he'll have a hard time changing his story. The twerp who ran a red light and broadsided me some 15 years ago tried to change *his* story once it got to the insurance stage, but the officer's report was sufficient to establish fault.

Kalera I know your pain, but I have one of those guys that will try to fix anything. His dad is "Super Mechanic" and DH inherited some of that. I know it's a total pain to get cars worked on and I really sympathize.

Geesh, just when you are dreaming of bunk beds, playsets....

nope - only with his insurance company. it was in a parking lot on private property. they won't do reports for that. i was SO SHOOK UP, i wasn't thinking - at all.

but by CA law, you have to call the police....if it's more than $500 in damage, at least the last time I took my driver's test, and I don't think they've changed it. He could even be charged for hit and run for leaving the scene before cleared by the cops. Ask me how I know....BTDT.

((((Vicki)))) I know what a pain it is. Cars are the bane of my existence most of the time...or were until we got our current one.

Awwwwwwwwwwww. Been there, done that! I'm sorry Karlera. I know how you feel. In our case, last month, I'd sold a lot, and hubby'd done a lot of computer work on the side, so it seemed like we were getting ahead, and then Jinx got sick, so it all went to the huge vet bill, instead of the car this time!

As Gilda Radner used to say, "It's always something!"

thanks, dear, but according to the local PD, that doesn't apply when it took place on private property, which the parking lot was.

**sigh**

no kidding! i'm beginning to feel like my car has a target painted on the side of it. i'm either dodging 90-yo lols or hotrodding teens. i drive with my lights on all the time, because my car is grey. my next one is going to be BRIGHT YELLOW!

well, they DO do a lot more than the Sacramento PD, trust me! they investigate things here that in Sacramento can only be done by phone. and i THINK now you only call the PD if someone is injured.

Ga. used to have the same deal (don't know if they still do or not)- accident on Private property - no police reports. Might not be true if there are injuries, but for just car damage - you are on your own.

My car was hit in my Apt. complex parking lot (it was parked) - guy came down the hill too fast (and it had been raining) hit the car next to me and forced that one into mine.

I heard it happen - and peeked out the window and saw my trunk open - (it popped open when it got hit). Fortunately for me and the other car owner the driver was responsible and honest - he came knocking on doors to see who's cars he had hit and gave us his insurance info. My car was an old one (a '73 and this happened in '90) so it got "totaled out" for about 300 - yeah like I could buy another car for that.

this is what i'm afraid is going to happen to me. **sigh** we have no real public transportation up here. i don't like the idea of being without a car. but i want the one i've spent so much on to keep running to be fixed, too.

My car is finally back on wheels, but still needs the brake master cylinder replaced. DH finally got the front suspension replaced and did the front brakes while he had the front end apart. With the weather cooling down in this part of the world I should be able to drive it, after the brake master cylinder is done, as it doesn't have A/C on it yet - it gets very hot in summer.
