(re)stringing question

Has anyone heard of coated cable *breaking*? I was given a 16" amber necklace to restring last week which was on 7-strand tigertail, and the cable was rusted, bent, and broken; the connections to the clasp were intact. I was going to restring it on silk and knot it, but the holes in the beads are way too big even if I use 5 strands of silk. However, they're not big enough for delicas or something to fit inside. If I re-do it on

49-strand cable, does anyone know if I risk that breaking the same way?

That old 7 strand tiger tail is not very good quality. I will use up what I have for temporay stringing, but it's neither greatly durable, nor does it drape well. The better brand and the 49 strand stuff IS good.

Can you use a thicker silk?

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Bead Sprite" :

]Many years ago, I bought some 0.12mm tiger tail which kept breaking. I ]think it's the crimps that cut through the very fine tiger tails. I ]switched to 0.18. I've been using the same reel of it for about 15 years. ]I bought a 1000 feet of it!

**grin** when what you need is tiger tail, nothing else will do. i use it, when i need something that will kink.

ALL THE TIME! that 7 strand old-fashioned stuff will not stand up over time

I would not do amber on knotted silk -- get some of the new "gold" colored 49 strand coated wire (there are two brands) and string it on that - should work nicely.

EVEN THAT will break SOMEDAY -nothing is forever - not even silk. My necklaces, that I wear heavily, generally last about 4 years on SoftFlex.....

Don't put amber on cable. Amber is too soft and the cable will wear away at the holes. Put it on silk or nylon.

This amber has already been worn by the cable, which is why the holes are so big.
