S-Clasps over Toggles

I'm having a problem finding nice, small plain toggles for my bracelets and necklaces and was wondering if I could use one of those funky S clasps instead that go over jump rings. (I mean, of course I CAN, but...)

Are they as secure? They look like the could really easily come undone. I'm thinking for use on Byzantine and similar things really. What are your thoughts?

Charlie.

i like them, but no, i don't think they are as secure, unless after you put them on, you push the clasp closed.

And if you DO push the S-clasp closed you will eventually work harden the metal there, stress it, and break it.

and that's why i switched to the toggles. because on bracelets, *on me*, the 's' clasps always come apart.

and i figured i'd break one sooner or later!

I like S-clasps for necklaces, but not for bracelets. Too hard to put on, IMO.

I might put in a big order when I get paid from my new job from fire mountain gems or somewhere similar. I want some of that stuff to coat pliers with to make them soft too.

LOL!!!

Somehow, I read that as you were working at Fire Mountain Gems!

Wow, that would have been GREAT news for those in England!

The bracelet that I wear every single day, all day, has an S-clasp and I love it. It never comes undone, and that's with kids fiddling with it all the time too!

S-clasps can work really well if the bracelet is sized properly to your wrist. I've had good luck with making very rounded hooks that have an opening juuust big enough to get the other ring through. They're definitely not the *most* secure clasp, but they're not terrible, either. Better than spring rings!

Unfortunately, they don't give estimated shipping cost on their website, and along with most other US websites it'll be a huge amount to the UK for only a few quid's worth of stuff! It's odd, it doesn't cost allot to send from the UK to the US, but it seems to cost a huge amount more then other way round!

S-clasps hold just as well as toggles, which come undone easily. Look great, but fall off your wrist in a heartbeat. Becki "In between the moon and you, the angels have a better view of the crumbling difference between wrong and right." -- Counting Crows

IME that depends largely on the toggle. For bracelets you have to use a longish one which requires a little fiddling to fasten -- but then it's much less likely to unfasten itself as you move around. This isn't an issue with necklaces, where the weight of the necklace will hold the toggle in place.

This is what I find too. I use toggles for security, so I often forgo the cute ones in favor of the ones with big ugly bars sticking out at the sides.

I've yet to have a problem with toggles; perhaps it's the length of the bar that makes the difference?

That *IS* odd, at least because it's only cost me $5.00 to ship small items to the UK.

Rio has very little info on their website... almost everything you would want to know is in their catalogs only, which is too bad for me! Because I can't find mine anywhere. I'll probably find them in the basement in

I mean, I would love their catalogues and would defiantly buy one IF I knew the shipping. I tried emailing but they just say I have to buy the catalogue. What's the point in spending $40 on catalogue if I might not buy anything from them because the shipping is insane? Why can't big companies like that manage to put a web shop together if the smaller ones can?
