How do you store your floss?

lucretia borgia wrote

Which is why I started using a combo system. ;)

Eons ago, one of the XS magazines had an offer, they'd send you 2 yards of every DMC color, bobbins, numbered labels and a storage box, for some incredibly low price. Since I always seem to be missing some color I only need for 6 stitches, not enough to justify bus fare to go buy one skein, I sprang for it. 90% of my floss is in the hardware parts cabinets, but when the skeins get so skinny the labels fall off, I put the remaining yard or two on the appropriate bobbin. When I'm kitting up something small like an ornament, I work off the bobbins so they don't get over-full with leftovers.

But I'm not spending the hours and hours to bobbin up all my floss.

No I haven't. We just replaced the upstairs shower/tub, and we're getting a new mattress set as our Christmas gift to each other. Maybe next year. By the way I use the Annie's key storage system instead of bobbins for floss and I love them (I have 4 storage sets of 300 keys each). I can pull for a project, or pull all the empty keys for a shopping trip.

While I like what I see of the Annie¹s at your house, I love the idea of something I can close the doors on!

And take a look at this site!

On bobbins in Pllano boxes and sorted in numeric order. I do this for silk, cotton, and rayon.

I liked these, except I'd need 3" drawers for the Rainbow Gallery stuff! Phooey.

I have one Darice box with my Rayon floss, and half-size with some silks... does anyone know if there is a floss box between those two sizes? I've been keeping my metalics in the silk box, and someone gave me a kit with SILK floss. How cool is that??! So now I have more floss and really, not much room to put it all... suppose I should get stitching, eh?

They are wrapped around small cardboard pieces, about an inch square. These all fit into what I call a fish tackle box. Every color is viewable and I keep em in rainbow order.

My needlepoint wool is divided into four plastic bags - red-orange family, yellow - green family - you get the idea.

My spools of thread miraculously fit into an old Whitman Sampler flat metal box.

Hi, Amber!

I use floss bobbins, stored in numerical order, in one of those toy car "garage" boxes that Walmart sells for about $8... the spaces are the perfect size, and it has two sidees, which makes it really easy to see what you have, and or need... :) For WIP's I take the bobbins out and put them in ziplocks with the fabric, chart, etc for each project. At one point I had three full sets of DMC and quite a few specialty threads, but I now have most of one full set and a few specialty threads, after being ripped off by an unscrupulous landlord last year. These storage boxes are great, though, so you might want to consider them!

I use floss away bags with the skeins loose in them until I need them. When I pull out skeins to use, I sort them into some ziptop baggies, with any spares into one big one. As I cut lengths off, I put them on bobbins. If there's anything left on the bobbin, I'll put that back in the floss away when I'm done. I'm not sure it's the most efficient method, but it works ok for me so far.
