The computer that died in 3 months gave you the option of setting it to watch US or European DVDs, with the caveat that you could only switch the setting a certain number of times and then it would be on that setting permanently. I had contemplated that since I had real DVD players affixed to the TVs, I could set the computer to European.
Have not read the documentation on the replacement one to find out whether that's switchable.
That's why I pay for cable. Doesn't get rid of the ads, but does get me programs worth watching.
We have weekends/overnights Classic Arts Showcase -- let's call it MTV for the older generation. Videos of classical music, scenes of plays/operas/ballets, clips from silent movies. That has no ads, and is a real pleasure to watch. Some of the music videos are in a concert setting, and some have the music as background to a travelogue of gorgeous scenery. Last month, one of them took us all around Heidelberg.
Check their website for whether it's available in your area, and if not, call your cable company and ask for it. Great for stitching to, and also great for falling asleep to.
Oh Rosemary - that is definitely one of my favourite programmes! I wish I`d been an archeologist. I also love Tony Robinson`s "Worst jobs in History" - what a fantastic teacher he would make. He`s so ENTHUSIASTIC about his subjects.
Do look out for "Worst jobs in history" folks - it`s really unmissable. Tanning, for one (my grandfather was a tanner - and what an awful, disgusting job it was) and a related job - Pure collecting. I wouldn`t have liked being a Spit Boy, either - or a wool weaver. Well worth watching, though. I`ve watched the whole series twice, now, it`s so good.

Another one here who can't stand reality shows. With one caveat: Rockstar Supernova. Of course, we like rock music so that helped. There were actually some really good singers that ended up in the final episodes and I've purchased and downloaded their music, even though they're not the ones who won.

Oh good heavens! My grandmother's small town in Germany got it in 1906. This came up when I mentioned that my house was built in 1905 and still has the pipes for the gas lights, meaning the electric is not original.
There was a regular trade (via the railways) in dog pures from many of the hunts in the North of England to the tanneries in Leeds. The 50 gallon drums, which often leaked, were not the most popular of cargoes for the shunters & porters especially on a hot summer's day
I remember our first visit to Orkney in 1978 - the three big diesel-electric generators in Kirkwall was still in 24 hour use generating electricity for the whole of Orkney and the undersea cables taking power to the Northern Isles was very new. The undersea cables carrying electricity across the Pentland Firth were not laid until the mid 1980s. Prior to the introduction of "mains" electricity on the Northern Isles almost every house had their own small diesel engine driving a small generator, usually in what had been the old outside lavatory or wash-house, to provide basic electric lighting. It must have made the island quite a noisy place when all those diesel engines were chugging away.
What a great series. Full of interesting stuff. Got me to reading all the MC Beaton books, well the Hamish MacBeth ones anyhow. Haven't started the Agatha Raisin ones, yet. The books are full of great quotes.
And, of course as trivia, Shirley Henderson - who was the "love" interest that becomes the gorgeous reporter plays Myrtle the Ghost in the Harry Potter movies - she has such a distinctive voice.

Loved him and Denny Crane dancing... Yes, that was great, too! Did you see the episode when Denny took him fishing in Canada? That was *classic*!!!
Yeah, it's silly but I like silly. And the premise of Earl trying to make up for past wrongs is kind of a nice change from most comedies.
Yup! I'm all caught up at the moment. Sometimes I'm able to watch them the same night, depending on if DH is home or not. He doesn't get into most of the shows that I like. His are Earl, BL & LV.
Now, if I could just finish catching up on the ng!!! Giving it a valient effort today. :)

Well, I've now got an extra room since DS#2 moved into his own home last weekend.
Kurt can drive, right? *I* am not going to get up at all hours of the morning to drive him to practice!!!

Yes, we had "Worst Jobs in History" about 4 months ago. That one was well promoted, so I knew it was coming up. Time Team is just on regularly, and not promoted at all. I don't get a TV guide, so I need to remember that Tuesdays I watch that channel at dinner time.
