Off topic - what do you watch

We have satellite TV and I love the range of show out there that are far more to my taste than the standard network fare. This is what is on during stitching time and some of my housework time

First choice - craft shows excepting anything on scrap booking. I'll include any antique shows with this (Antiques Roadshow, Cash in the Attic...) and things like Mission Organization or neat Second choice - science and nature shows ( I love Mythbusters, Nova, anything with David Attenbourgh, National Geographic). Third choice - history, but nothing past the (US) Colonial era Fourth - John Ratzenburg, Dirty Jobs (I think I love Mike Rowe) and similar quirky things Fifth - certain reruns - As Time Goes By, Star Trek (most of the range of the different series), Avengers, The Saint, Stargate, McGyver

Who's next

We now have only rabbit ears, but get a surprising 6 channels in good weather (9 in bad).

Ironically, once we switched to RE, we found lost one show that we really enjoy; Battlestar Galactica. That we get on DVD when it comes out. All the other shows we watch were on one of those 6 stations.

NCIS, The Unit, Lost, Law and Order:CI and Desperate Housewives Occasionally I remember PBS runs britcoms at 7:30, but I always tend to miss my favourite; Waiting for God. And TVO always has something on in the evening, but nothing that has hit my regular schedule.

I refuse to get into anything new, I've been burned too many times. Firefly, The Nine, Daybreak; all canceled within the first year.

Beyond that, it's DVDs from the library. I'm going through the BallyK series right now. And I have a few Midsomer Murders with the odd Morse and Prisoner thrown in for good measure.

I`ve got the complete "Morse" collection on DVD (and the Corgi model of his jaguar!) and most of the Midsomer Murders DVDs too - fifteen to go - then, of course, there will be the new series!

I loved Ballykissangel, the Prisoner (we went to the village (Portmeirion) when we were last in Wales)) and Waiting for God is on my list of DVDs to get.

I love anything historical, and the good old classics (Pride and Prejuduce, Jane Eyre, etc.) Prefer the Next Generation of all the Startrek series. I`d love to see"Roots" again. John surprised himself by watching a few of the Catherine Cookson ones over Christmas - it`s always a good recommendation if he stays awake! Another favourite is "Sharpe" and "Judge John Deed".

I would be terribly happy if my husband decided one day to chuck his TV hobby and thus, chuck the TV.

Otherwise, I watch what is termed in this house as THOOOOOOOSE channels. Discovery, History, HGTV (although gone downhill), Discovery Home, DIY, TLC, stuff like that. I will also admit to a weird fetish for VH1's countdown shows.

Love L&O and have been watching it for years. CSI 1 & 3 are fine, but spare me Hocaine and the Sunglasses of Justice.

NCIS is starting to bore me. Grey's Anatomy is morally bankrupt--and celebrates it! House has gotten just too ridiculous. And as I said above, Ugly Betty. Best writing on TV. Period.

I'm giving this weird "In Case of Emergency" a chance because I am so one of those voted-most-likely-to-succeed-in-high-school-and-then-didn't types, but the writing's not good and if it didn't validate my existence, I'd be bored. Plus I don't like David Arquette.

I just want something decent to watch when I'm stitching. This usually ends up to be the Boomerang channel on digital cable, which is all the old-timey cartoons that pre-date me, but that I grew up with anyway. My 3-year-old loves them and her thought processes and speech have progressed faster watching those than the kidcrap they have out now. I chalk it up to the sophistication of the writing and that they were writing for adults, too, so there's lots of subtext.

Note to self: Find Rocky & Bullwinkle DVDs.

Thanks Pat,

I'd forgot about Sharpe (Sean Bean; yum) and Foyle's War, both are in my library :-) My Wish list only holds 50 titles, and I easily exceed that on any given day.

Actually, I find a lot of the BBC DVDs carry a good biography of the main actors. I've picked up a few tips for other series/movies from them.

We've gone the rabbit ears route too - we're far too busy to spend a lot of time watching television. Gave the kids a choice - TV or Internet - computer won hands down.

Anyway - when I have time to watch, I still like ER (gotten better this season), House (although you're right about this season), L&O, CSI #1. Sometimes Without a Trace or Cold Case. My dd loves Supernanny and Medium.

I assume these are the "new series" not the original one.....

Never even heard of them....

I liked BallyK at first and got bored with it after a while. I haven't seen The Prisoner in a while though....

I loved reading and watching the first Morse books/movies. Then I got PO at him and stopped paying attention.

You noticed that too about HGTV. Other than VH1, we watch the same thing. I also get History International and LOVE IT. Have you see Meet the Ancestors?

(snip)

My two grew up watching Tex Avery and other vintage (pre-1960's) cartoons.

LOL, and I can take Hocaine no problems, but the main female lead (the one that completely ruined Providence for me) in NY is more than I can bear.

I hear you. The whole Gibbs retiring/not retiring thing got trite quickly. Followed shortly by the Gibbs/Ducky childishness.

I had hoped something interesting would happen between Abby and Marty (but I just noticed the actor died last year), so that's out too.

So we are left with Tony, his secret gf, and who's watching them. Ick.

We have rabbit ears. We get nine channels. I work mornings and in the afternoons it's all judges, all the time for me.

I enjoy NFL and NASCAR for stitching time.

The only primetime show I'm following right now is "Bones", on FOX. I usually watch "The Amazing Race" when it's running but the next incarnation is an "All-Star" edition. I detest those in general, and this one is bringing back CBS's darlings, Rob and Amber. I know a lot of people love them, but I don't find them enjoyable to watch so no TAR for me.

We have digital cable (because the price difference between digital and expanded basic was less than $1 per month). Rabbit ears gets us next to nothing out here so we rely on the cable. That said, the only digital tier channel we regularly watch is Noggin.

I prefer House, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I like both ER and Men in Trees so I'm irked that they are on at the same time. Haven't watched any American Idol this season although husband has been taping it. Can't wait until MLB starts up so I can watch the Tribe almost every day--even got the

4-year-old excited about baseball this year! Of course I'll have The Weather Channel running when hurricane season fires up again. But to be completely honest, the show we watch most frequently right now is the local news so we have notice of where the lake-effect snows are going to hit each day ... yes, it is snowing again now.

Brenda, we also have digital cable, and found it cost us only abut $6 a month more to get DVR (basically TiVO). It's so easy to use, it really does simplify my life.

I know it's not "chic" to say you are much of a tv watcher, but we are. I'm definitely a child of the tv generation, and there are lots of things I watch and enjoy. That said, I also don't mind a bit turning off the set to read or listen to music and stitch.

DH likes anything medical, scientific or legal -- fiction or non-fiction -- so we watch all the CSIs (I agree about the one based in NY, I love Gary Sinise, but don't care for Kanakaredes much); so many things are now opposite the L&Os that we record those, and catch them on Saturdays or during re-runs. We both love Heroes and Studio 60. I'll also be glad when Jericho comes back on. I'm rather tired of Lost, but do keep up with the story line. We watch House & Bones, and sometimes Monk & Psych. I don't like Ugly Betty at all -- I tried watching it, and it just seemed too cartoonish for me.

We also watch (well, DH does) the military channel, and we sometimes watch the history channel, and some sort of science channel that does a lot about space. We catch ER on re-runs.

I don't generally watch soaps during the daytime, though I'll admit to GH as a guilty pleasure occasionally.

I do agree that HGTV has gone downhill a lot, but I can't say whether it's the quality of the shows, or just that I'm getting tired of it.

DH watches the food channel a lot, but it bores me, so I read then.

There are re-runs of made-for tv movies on the Hallmark Channel from time to time, and I often watch them.

Now lest you think I'm nothing but a recliner-potato, I do all the tv watching while cleaning house, painting, stitching, reading, playing with grandchildren, etc. I stay quite active, but I do enjoy having the tv going in the background most of the time.

We don't watch any of the reality shows. Life has enough reality as it is, I don't need to watch people bitch at each other. That reminds me, someone who was totally addicted to Thirty-Something once asked if I watched it. I said, nope, I lived it, had enough while I was going through it. I feel pretty much that way about reality shows.

If I'm not interested in what they're showing, I have the complete M*A*S*H on DVD.

Ooh yes - Foyles war! Must soon be time for it to come back. Having lived through that period, I can promise that everything is very tryue to life. It brings back a lot of memories, both good AND bad.

Goodbye Mr Tom is a favourite film of that era, too.

I don't really watch much TV like I used to -- don't even have cable anymore. The only shows I will make a point of watching is The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson (taped and watched the next day) and I simply will not miss DaVinci's Inquest.

Other than that, I will watch TV shows on DVD a season behind - getting the DVDs from the library. Came to love The West Wing, BlackAdder, Jeeves & Wooster, & House this way. I still don't watch House over the air though.

I own the DVDs for Sports Night, Kids In The Hall & The Sentinel and they get watched fairly regularly - though just favorite episodes or episodes that come to mind because of something else that reminds me.
