OT: Long Rant - Verizon & Bills!

Jan 29, 2009 15 Replies

So, here I go, on my what should be monthly rant at Verizon. The good news

- finally, someone who actually did what needed to be done - I hope. The bad news, they keep our money for another couple of months. It's UNBELIEVABLE!

We live in a community which had an investment by Verizon, as it was their

2nd ever (1st full scale) all fiber, hi-tech, FIOS community. They did a small community in Texas before this, and then - voila - Brambleton. So everything here is fiber to the house, our house is wired throughout - some baseline, and then we paid the builders for additional drops. Our storage room - where the central board is - looks like a small IT company. No choice - except for how many outlets you actually want finished with plates

- beyond 4. We have data, tv, phone, & coax (satellite). Plus separate drop that we did wiring the house for sound. Had to pay the builder up front for the router and accoutrements. Done. HOA includes internet, basic cable along with the other normal stuff.

Now, 1st year - it was 8 months before we had a correct bill, forget correct listing. Got charged for router ($350) which a - we already had paid for & b - wasn't right cost. Would get charged for internet service - then for cable, all kinds of nonsense. Fight over phone service - which we negotiate

- our package is supposed to give us up to 4 numbers by distinctive ring. After a couple of months of fights, I get a 2nd number (for the business). Then the woman who handles the special Verizon office for our community calls and tells me that I can't have the 3rd number (fax) and that I'm lucky she's let the sneaked thru 2nd stay. HUH? This involves me threatening them with fraud.

Next, the HOA & Verizon change the TV arrangement because the original part of the community gets retrofitted to full fiber, and the FIOS TV conversion (it hadn't been approved by county when we moved in) is being done, finally. Which means that the HOA will cover the basic service, and we individually arrange and get billed for our set-top boxes. OK - they adjust the HOA fees

- after I and some others raise this issue at the HOA-Verizon briefing meeting. We are assured the billing office kinks are worked out, and they now have a "special" line/office all set up. Uh huh. I knew this was true when we got a lovely mailing advising us of the wonders of FIOS internet & pricing, (which we'd had since day 1, and is included in our HOS fees) We get our appt for installation, and it's during the Jewish Holidays - to be specific - on Yom Kippur. I call to change it - they tell me that we'll have to wait about 6 weeks - but in the meantime we'll be without TV service

- period. Because our block will be turned off from the original feed and switched to the new feed. So, after some ranting, raving, I get an apptmt that will have us only out for about 4 days. Some inconvenience, and not sure the Internet will be up, but we'll see. Then we get charged for a mieed appt - at $50. And then they don't show for the apptmt. So finally, we get someone at a different office and get the charges fixed and another apptmt. OK.

Next, the router goes out. After 3 days of arguing with tech support and trying to get it working - they agree to send a new one. Fine. Now the bills are wrong again and we get charged for the replacement router. And installation of the set-top boxes (which we self-installed). After about 6 weeks we finally get a credit arranged that shows up in another month - so

3-4 months they have our money (yup, we auto-pay this). Then after a couple of normal months - the power supply goes out on the router. Which means no net, no TV. And, you can't buy these - it's a weird voltage - and while we could get one at the Verizon store, they wouldn't/couldn't arrange the pick-up - we instead have to wait for UPS - another few days (the guy did overnight it - but it's not really overnight from them). Great. 3-4 peaceful months.

Now, this past spring - warnings for the digital conversion. In May we get letters to start arranging for any adapters we need. Free. HOA/Verizon deal. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that I spent at least 12 hours of my life trying to get 3 stinking free adapters. I called in June, tried to do this - after 43 min on hold - and the not so clever girl finally tells me I have to give her a CC for the order. No, I finally lose it and tell her to get her supervisor. Eventually we do the order - but then I get disconnected. Call back, someone else - they work it thru - after about 30 min - I think this is done. 2 days later someone calls and says the order isn't right. Call them. Do again. No problem. A week later - no boxes - call to verify - no order exists. Do again. Now do it for 5 - since they're free, and that takes care of all the old tvs, and well, the anticipated breakage. That evening woman supposedly from Verizon HOA office calls and says order is correct, being done. OK. Same woman calls again, says problem with order can't be handled by office that did it and call her. HUH? Do call again - am finally assured that they're coming. We now get 3 boxes. OK. All good.

Next - the router craps out. After a good 3 hours jerking around with the tech support and trying to get things to work - which often involves running up and down many flights - the tech guy says - yup, it's pooched. We'll send you a new one. Call when it gets there so we can ping it to make sure everything resets. We do that. Router got here in about 2 days. Great.

Now the bill in Aug comes, and - surprise - we're billed for the free adapters. For 3. Next, Sept - billed for 3 and a Router for $54. Great. Next Octo - we're now billed for 6 adapters, same in Nov, then in Dec for 5. Each month, I have some conversation with Verizon about this. And, yup - today I notice that they already took the $$ for the bill due mid-next week. Nearly $170. Ouch. Call them, again. Spend an hour on the phone, and the nice lady is laughing "why are they billing you for this?" So, she has to go thru month by month and adjust the bills, and stop the wrong billing. Then I have to crawl under desk to get SN on this adapter, and go find the other 2 in boxes with their number so that Verizon can hace a record. FWIW, we only have 3, and use 1. Next - the router. She's happy to do the credit, but, it has to be approved by someone else. And then will get applied. Great, I thank her, etc.

Now.....for the rant ... She says "But..." - your bill closed yesterday (the one that will be due in March) and, well, the credits (of about $170) will be on the following one . I say "as in the bill for Mar, due in April?" Yup. So, they've been taking this money since last summer, and I won't get the credit until April? Or they could send me a check, maybe, in 4-6 weeks, but they do more research. Huh? Why not just credit it back to the account that pays it automatically? Nope - they don't do that. So, I'm kind of steaming, given our tight budget, and, well, we'll see. At least she was very nice, and is in the Verizon/community office, and gave me her name to follow-up. Ack. I think it's a no win. The kicker - Verizon world HQ - just about 3 mi up the road from here. It's a true Hobson's choice - the tech service is generally good in functioning, especially wireless - but the business end just stinks. If you switch to better business dealings, the tech side tends not to be so good. In this area, the only cable choice & phone landline is Verizon (the counties award areas). Though, we're downsizing our phone package, and I'm thinking of going to Vonage instead.

Ack. Sorry for the long saga. It's sadly kind of funny.

Well, we dumped Verizon for Comcast. So far so good. And DH is in the process of switching from Verizon Wireless to ATT for the cell phones.

All I wanted was a phone that didn't eat battery. Now I'll have an iPhone, because frankly, if DH and DS had one, dangitall, so was I.

Oh course, it will be a fun toy.

I think I would be in court! I do hope you have every paper saved, and a log of all the phone calls and time you have spent on this. You have been treated outrageously! I am NOT a litigous person, but enough is enough, and I think you ought to haul their butts into court.

Whoa - DS has an iPhone? That's a splurge for a teen.

Most of my friends with them use them pretty seriously. Actually, when the friend who is the absent-minded professor was getting one, the kids - then aged 23, 21, 18 - all went nuts. Why - my take was that they were jealous. I gave them some grief - their legitimate worry - she'd leave it someplace. But, she loves it, and has sucessfully not lost it, yet. Very smart now with all the apps available.

LOL - it's useless to haul them to court. But, it is certainly amazingly frustrating. Besides, we have our hands full as I'm trying to finish putting together all the stuff for our attorney to start action against our building. The money issue is much more significant, as well as the aggravation. Verizon is like being stung - the itch is there, then it clears, and then it seems to bother you again. I'm just hoping this time things will work out. We'll see. I do appreciate your sentiment. It does get harder to stay polite on the phone - but yelling won't help Sounding annoyed - while apologizing to the current person - does seem to work - key word is "seem" .

Thanks, Ellice

We're getting three of them - referbs from the factory, so that is cheaper. Daddy doesn't deny DS much. I'm feeling kinda guilty about it now. If there is an issue, I'll just ask to get the $$ back and take a freebie

My son has one - mostly because it`s useful for his job. As for me - I LIKE being unavailable! ;-) Even the ordinary phone can be too demanding - we monitor our calls all the time, and if it`s no-one we want to speak to - we ignore it!

I have a mobile phone. When I bought it 3 years ago I asked the shop for a basic phone, they were amazed that I didn't want to text anyone or take photographs. I explained that the only time I would use it was to phone Maureen to let her know that I'd arrived safely when I travelled from Stronsay to Kirkwall; the shop loaded the phone with 30 pounds and I've still got over 20 pounds left on it. I do have to remember to use it every 90 days (I just phone our landline phone then ring off) to keep the account live. When we get an occasional call from some sales people insisting that they can help us to save money on calls from our mobile I let them ramble on for as long as possible (we're retired, no time pressures!) before telling them that I use the mobile to make just one short phone call every 90 days or so.

Oh, Pat, I knew I liked you. We do the same thing!

We find them useful as we're often going in different directions, and with the reffing commitments there are often last minute issues to be handled. But, I will confess that I've come to the point of letting calls go to voice mail if I don't want/need to be interrupted. Also, just talking about this with a friend last night, call waiting - getting rid of it. I realize that I really find it rude when people click you to hold - on personal calls - to say "hi" or take another call. Most of the time it's just run of the mill. As we don't have elderly parents that we're concerned about, or kids -same thing. Anyone calling - can leave a message and we'll get back to them. Might as well be polite, give attention to whomever you are speaking with.

DH has had a real issue with cell phone 'cause he couldn't have a camera at work. And, as he schedules a rink (Verizon ctr) for refs, plus his own stuff, he needs to be accessible at work - and can't use his non-work e-mail (completely firewalled off). So, he's had an archaic cell phone that needs desperately to be replaced. Finally, this month, they announced that it would be allowed to bring a phone with camera - just don't use the camera - or else. So, yeah - we get to go have a go 'round with Verizon Wireless. Woo hoo.

I would have a Blackberry or an iPhone in a heartbeat if I could honestly justify the cost. I like new tech toys.

My not-quite-ex DH on the other hand is not a technology fan at all, and has never had a cell phone, even when DD and I offered to put him on our plan. He said he would carry one when the Queen does.

Good lord what a mess!!! I'm surprised you still have your sanity. I'd end the auto payment immediately and if they bitched tell them it'll be reinstated once their billing problems are fixed. That way at least you could dispute charges in real time rather than having to deal with multiple mistakes after they already have your money.

Yup, the auto pay cancellation is a good idea. We just reactivated our web bill pay service thru the credit union, and that works just fine. We stopped it for a while after some bugs, but now they've changed some things, and we're going back to using it. So, I can end the Verizon auto-pay. Honestly, I think they signed us up when we moved into this house when the service was set-up. Also, I think I'm going to have them just send us a check - IIRC, they actually come a lot sooner than the rep tells you on the phone!

Thanks for the sympathy. My sanity is teetering plenty - between what little there ever was, my fending off depression, and just trying to keep our heads above water and cope. This weekend - writing up the stuff to modify our mortgage to continue with getting out of the hole - and keep the house, of course. But, woohoo - another job fair next week - so hope springs eternal.

=A0As for me - I

DH & I I got a Jitterbug last year and we love it enough that DH is going to get his own once we catch up enough to get it. We DON'T need a camera, we DON'T need to text message and we don't need unlimited minutes because we, too, don't always need to be connected. We're also VERY HAPPY with the service. I received a call (from DH) on the Jitterbug in my friend's living room - where they DO NOT receive a signal for their own cell phone. :-))))) When my hiking group had to wait for a hiker to rest before continuing on down the cliff oh - hill, several of us wanted to call our spouse/family so they wouldn't worry when we were late. Two or three other people used my Jitterbug because I had a good signal, while their cell phones were useless. :-))) The buttons are good sized (DH has big fingers & mine aren't that tiny either) and are back lit, and the screen is easy to see. The price is reasonable, too. We pay less than $25 a month for

60 minutes and voice mail. I know I sound like a commercial, but we really do love our cell phone. We've had others in the past and this, by far, is the best fit for us - literally. :-)) I even like the way it fits in my hand. :-).

So far, we don't really give out the number, except to a few select friends of DH, who tend to try to reach him when he is already on his way somewhere. I also carry it because we live 25 miles from town so it's nice to know I can call the road service people if I need to or if he wants to call and say "__________ is ready for you to pick up". It used to be really annoying to get home, only to find that I should have stopped somewhere in town before going home. :-) With the voice mail, we can just let the phone ring and then listen to the message when we can pull over or when we get where we're going. As with many of us, I don't WANT (or need, thank God) live my life with my ear attached to a telephone. :-)))

Liz from Humbug

I think you will find coverage has more to do with the server you are using than the 'phone itself.

Although I agree some people over use 'phones, I have to say I would really miss mine, very useful for certain things. It's the usual thing really, whether you have common sense or not ! They had to bring in a law here that you can only use hands free sets in the car while driving, big fine if caught speaking without pulling over to do so.

Liz -

I'm happy to read your testimonial, because that's the only phone that's ever appealed to me. All I want a phone for is emergency use...on the rare occasion I'm caught in traffic and late for an appt., road breakdowns, etc. And maybe for situations like last week - getting out of a meeting at 7:45 p.m. I could call ahead for a pizza or Chinese food and have it ready for pickup on the way home, LOL! (Would have spared me a fast food burger because DH didn't want to wait for something else to be ready.)

Thank you!

Sue
