OT - Maine Coon Cats

Oct 04, 2005 39 Replies

My female cries her head off when she wants to let us know she is bored and we need to do something about it RIGHT NOW!

Jaenne

That's a house cat? LOL - I know they get huge!

LOL

Our adult cats range from the 20 lb siamese/tom mix to a 5 lb calico.

We have one that looks like she has Maine Coon somewhere in her ancestry, the body style matches, and she weights about 15 lbs. She can mew tho, LOL

My Siamese sounded as if each breath was going to be her last, long, laboured breath, when she slept. Scared me to death when I would be on the couch reading or stitching and all of a sudden from under the couch came this horrible, near-death noise.

My dog does that. He does what the Vet calls reverse sneezing when he gets excited and although I know he's not really in major trouble and I can soothe him out of it, it still scares me witless. It sounds something like an asthma attack in people.

Lucille

We believe you meant to say A-meow.

Our Siameasles used to sort of do a cross between a bleat and a gibber at birds! Hilarious!

If anyone has Maggie Lee Smith`s email address (I`ve temporarily mislaid it) she has had a Maine Coon for years.

Should have said Margaret Lee Riguel - (not Smith) has had a Maine Coone for years. If anyone has her email address, please let me have it. I just did a Google search for her but her page came up as "not available".

"Jaenne Bonner" had some very interesting things to say about Re: OT - Maine Coon Cats:

Is Nefertiti younger? Teddy's twice her size!

Felix (my presumed part MC) snores, but not quite that loudly. :-)

Nefertiti is only a few months younger. Teddy is just that BIG!

You weren't kidding about getting a saddle for him. He's bigger than my full-grown cat, I think. Is Teddy a purebred Maine Coon?

He was abandoned by his mother at an office building. I adopted him from a friend. As a kitten, he looked like a textbook Maine Coon kitten.

Jaenne

Cup your hand over his nose - that soon stops it. A bit like making someone breathe into a paper bag when hyperventilsting. Cavaliers are very prone to it - it`s mainly due to their soft pallette vibrating - as you say, when they get excited.

Pat P

Maltese are prone to it too. With Puff, gently rubbing his nose and speaking quietly and slowly seems to calm him enough to stop, but I'm going to try covering his nose the way you described. It couldn't hurt.

Lucille

Funny about this - the chocolate lab we are "sitting" has this thing were he rubs his nose (both sides) along the ground, the furniture, the cabinets, the rugs, people. It is pretty funny to watch, but I have to wonder "what itches". He's done it since puppyhood too.

Cheryl

Our cavalier does that - usually after eating or snuffling around the undergrowth. We assume she`s using the carpet like a napkin - to wipe her face clean! If she`s been out in the rain she races around the house like a mad thing - to dry her feet, we`re sure. If we dry them for her she doesn`t do it!

And I don't care if the "experts" say cats are colourblind.

I have to agree. I had stuck a piece of white paper under the clear plastic cover of a 3 ring binder and it happened to have one of those little green 'sign here' arrows stuck on it. My cat clawed like mad at it, perplexed that he couldn't manage to move or grab it.
