OT More Rita - the news coverage

I've been watching the news coverage of Rita - the "live" coverage to be exact.

OK -- I know that there are people that will go stand there and let the ocean splash over them while the winds howl around them.

BUT why must the media go take pictures of them?

Because there are stupid people everywhere who will do it, and apparently there are also stupid people who want to watch it.

I'd be heading for the hills if I lived any further south than I already do.

But, doesn't part of you wonder if seeing idiot #1 doing, encourages more idiots to try it??? Sort of introducing a new form of mischief?

Where`s Austen in relation to the hurricane? I`m worried about Victoria - AND her lovely garden.

Oh yes, there are lots of idiots who have "hurricane parties" and try to ride it out. I understand being stuck, and having no choice -- but staying because you think it might be fun -- idiocy.

How far inland is Laredo? Can't get a straight answer from DBIL on that.

Sounds like the Darwin Award candidates who go surfing with hurricanes offshore.

Laredo is on the Rio Grande River 150 miles southwest of San Antonio. It is not on the Gulf. It is on the Texas Mexico border.

News here--on the TX/LA border--has been reporting that Austin and San Antonio may possibly receive hurricane force winds. Many people in my area have left or are leaving for the Austin area, but now it doesn't sound like such a sure bet. I live about 100 miles east of Galveston, on the coast, and a lot of us are still watching and waiting to see if the storm makes a northerly or north-easterly (is that even a word?) turn. It's going to be ugly. I've lived here all my life--44 years--and this is the worst storm I've seen. It's been a long time for us, and it's very scary right now. We will probably be leaving early tomorrow morning to head for the Dallas area.

My soon-to-be stepfather took some convincing to leave Houston. My mother emailed me last night and said he was packing the car to leave for West Virginia (and spend some time with her). But the Norwegian news outlets over here are reporting that there's not a drop of gasoline to be had in Houston (there's a LOT of Norwegians down there).

I really, really hope he's gotten out of there. Becky

Good luck to him, Becky - not looking good, is it? Hope all goes well.

Thanks. DH's otherwise wonderful brother does not grasp that I have a hard time judging distances from maps. :-)

You don't need to judge, just look at the legend and see the scale of the map then you can work out distances pretty much to the mile or kilometre, whichever you use.

Because people like to be seen on T.V. showing off how "brave" they are. As to why the media shows them doing stupid things, right now, there isn't much else to film, and they need to keep their audience entertained for as long as possible.

What get me is the media crews standing (or trying to) against hurricane force winds, when they could just as easliy show it through a window. Again with that bravery thing, I guess. Lee Ann
