OT - perils of being bored at work

I've been working for a prestigious sporting organisation for nearly 6 months. As usual the first three months of any job go by in a blur as you get to grips with new processes and procedures. Since then I have come to the realisation that I am only working about one third of my time. I mentioned this the manager and said I was more than willing to cut my hours, thus cut the outgoings etc. He was aghast and you would have thought I'd suggested a 66% payrise, rather than a 50% pay cut! His solution to my boredom was that I should surf the internet to fill in my days, and I have done this for a couple of months now, and while it is great fun, it is also expensive - I see all these wonderful things that I simply must have! I have acquired all sorts of wonderful needlework charts, and all I need now is the time to put needle to fabric.

My allergy to boredom and dysfunctional colleagues finally won last week and I'm in the running for another job. New job will be about

5kms from home - well within cycling distance, and it is part time - afternoons only. Whilst I will be financially poorer for the move I hope I can get motivated to get a bike and make a lifestyle change, which I hope will be much better for me in the long run.

At the moment I am wondering if I have taken total leave of my senses, or whether my move will be a much better thing for me.

I wouldn't mind a job just like that - close enough to ride a bike. Have to be mornings though...

It's more difficult to LOOK busy than to BE busy. However, I suggest you stick with the full-time job anyway. First, it could certainly become busy, and in the meantime you can read some really good books that are on the internet via various college libraries. And it sounds as though there are some good folks where you are now. Also, what about benefits? Benefits are seldom available in part-time work.
