Excuse my ignorance (I'm colour blind!) but is an "Ott lamp" what I would describe as a "daylight bulb" or a bulb designed to make colours look "correct" as in daylight.

It depends on which lamp you have. Ott makes both (tru-color and vision saver), as well as a SAD/plant lamp. There is some difference between the light that comes off of the bulbs (they're all fluorescent bulbs, but the phosphor coating on the bulbs is somewhat different, depending upon which bulb you have).
