Directory question - need input

I think the Directory is already bulging, but if anyone has a personal website, your signature space below your newsgroup posting is the best place for it. The Directory really should be used for contact information that we don't want to publish on the web but we want to share with others. I believe that internet etiquette allows 4 lines for the siggy area, so take advantage of that space as well.

Jeanne, If you are interested in something LIKE excel - there is something called "Open Office". Before I close I will hunt down a website for you. It is a completely free program that can open and create windows office things (like excel and word)

The program is associated with Sun Micro systems. I have used it and it works well

My goal is to send out a Directory that is ready to print. I hate it when I get a document and then it prints wonky. I'll do my best to make sure it's a printable format.

I like the plain text version; I don't use Word, and don't want to. I've never tried the Excel, and don't know if Appleworks could read it. Lee

I prefer text, but whatever is easiest for you is just hunky dory.

Either one would be fine with me. The text version is easier to read IMO, but Excel is OK too. Seems to me that the person doing the work should get to call the shots! Roberta in D

You genius! Do the directory in excel so we have flexibility with sorting and such and then let everyone know they can use either of these freebies if they don't have the application.

Just like how many sites use .pdf's on their website or for newsletters and such and provide a link to the free Adobe reader.

the spreadsheet could be saved in tab delimited format from excel so that people that don't have excel can still see it, an those that do can save it in rich format from that file.... sorry if this has been said already, the thread is too long to go through all the repsonses...

I wander if this might be the solution to the issue: Google has an online spreadsheet which can be created and stored online, and the creator can invite others to view it . I haven't tried it yet - it says that others can edit it, but in reading from other users, it looks like the creator has to give a permission to do so. you can download a personal copy to edit on your own - for birthdates, etc.

thanks Bev, oh boy, this sounded so good to me so i went to check them out. the excel viewer you can not edit. i guess that means you cant sort the data in it either? the open office for windows was 93MB. i use dial up so that would probly take me the better part of a day to download it. oh well. i'll take the directory in whatever format it comes in and figure it out later. rofl, for all i've self taught or brain picked about puters over the past

20yrs i've never had the need (that i know of) for using a spreadsheet. so far i've coped with the directory in text format. we'll see how i do with this one in whatever format. chilly cheers from winter in the south pacific. oh i see we all survived the passing of that big asteroid yesterday or was it today and i should still worry. : / jeanne

yup, found that prog but at 93MB download on dialup, would probly take most of a day to get it. the phone has to used at some stage thru the day for various things so i'll give it a miss for now, thanks anyhow. Jeanne, If you are interested in something LIKE excel - there is something

Cathy, from u'r suggestion i went to check this out. i had to log in to my google acct first. had not used it in ages so forgot my password, no worrys tho, asked to reset it and did so now i've had a look/see at their spreadsheet. it could work for us. heres the link for anyone who'd like to check it out and report back on what they think and will it be safe for us to use for our RCTQ directory. the person who starts it can then invite with email addys, any one to view or, not and, edit it and it is saved on the google files i guess. accessible online from anywhere when u log in. can also print it off from there or download to your own puter from there. just seems like this might work. just need some folks here to check it out and report back to us. cheers, jeanne

Looking forward to it, Alice!

Excel is great...RTF format may be better, that way people can open the file with any number of applications.
