Feed your stash

I have shoopped and shhhhooopppeeedddd and shopped on line (after going to both Joann's and Hancock's here in town) and finally ended up (with an RCTQ'er's advice) going to Wally's World (Sat evening after 7 PM) to get the prequilted baby panels.....they only had Carebears with Blue background--and I NEED pink--but I got all they had (3) and the clerk pointed out a flaw in one (I can work around it with a star appliqué) so I went up front and the manager gave me 10% off --until she saw my cast (asked why I didn't use their scooter ---well I ASKED for help with one and the gal couldn't get it to work--so I WALKED the length of the store very very slowly)--and she gave me 20% off.... YAY!!!! I have to say that the customers in the store were very nice and went around me without asking me to 'get outta their way' even to the point of going to a diff aisle so I wouldn't have to rush...now I was happy for that ; ) When the gal ahead of me was having her fabric cut she was complaining about her DH (who was with her) always asking WHAT are you gonna do with that...I said mine just asks if I 'got enuf'. He spoke up and said: I don't dare ask her that....she'd buy out the store ........she just LOL : ) FYI, I do not shop at Wally's World I just feel far too overcrowded there so you know how 'desperate' I was.

Butterfly (still on the 'hunt' as these will be used at "Gram Gram's cottage" and I do not want to spend a lot of effort in them--they each have their own for home)

Polly, I hope it counts that I am getting a quarter of Steam a Seam bonding stuff? Won't be anywhere near a quilt shop for a while - and no time to get to one at the moment. . In message , Polly Esther writes

Well, talk about timing! I was going to make my usual rounds at the thrift stores today, with nothing in mind to actually buy, just browsing..... Lo and behold what did my eyeballs spot??? A bolt of fabric.... and upon closer inspection it was a bolt of about 15 metres of a 100% polished cotton with a hint of a woven look to it. PERFECT backing fabric!!

Much to my delight when I came to the till the price?? A whole $5.00!!!!!

Does that make for a great S.E.X. or what????

~KK in BC~ living on a tiny budget is not stopping me from quilting! Oh and I managed to pick up some frugal batting as well. They are mattress pads in mint condition and since I tie most of my quilts anyway, they work great. I have used them many times and washed and washed and washed them with no ill effects. These suckers cost me a whole $2.00 each.

I too am a frugal quilter and buy men's cotton shirts all the time at the Salvation Army thrift store. On Wednesdays all clothing is half price except for one color of price tag (they have five colors and it changes each Wednesday). I get the largest, long-sleeved shirts I can find and leave the pocket(s) on the fronts and incorporate them in the quilts. In this throw-away world we now live in, some of the clothing is in almost-new condition. Since Snigs found the website for the sleeping bags for the homeless, now I know exactly what these shirts will be used for (although I've also used them in regular quilts too). Will now be on the lookout for mattress pads.

My husband says my "frugal" is spelled "be> Well, talk about timing! I was going to make my usual rounds at the thrift

This was a rare scoop at this local thrift store. I am assuming it came from a yard sale leftover since that is where most of the stuff that does not sell goes. I too buy cotton clothing and such. I love what I do and in my world it's not being cheap. It is called my own kind of recycling! And frugal sounds so much nicer .

I have used those old scratchy blankets for batting as well as those mattress covers and old quilts that are "not pretty" anymore. Our SallyAnn sells them for a couple bucks each and I was surprised at how many of the local quilters go there for their stuff too.

Of course I will never make quilt show quality quilts out of this stuff but I can tell you the recipients of my meagre offerings are more than happy with them, used stuff or not. The part I feel better about is that I get my quilting fix, my friends get a comfy quilt and the price is right. Plus they wash up well and don't run because of being 'pre' washed and if they meet up with an unfortunate accident along the way it isn't a hard pill to swallow. From previously loved blankets and clothing to newly loved quilts. What better and more comforting way can one recycle? LOL

I just bought a piece of polar fleece at WalMart 'cause I want to try the bunny ear methods of finishing the edges. Then, some little kid is going to get this pretty pink blanket.

It's not exactly a FQ, but does that count as adding to my stash?

We finally heard from our Linus coordinator that lives in Pascagoula. Her house was destroyed - water to the ceiling she said. Everyone was really worried because we hadn't heard anything until today.

Ok...Ok....only for you Polly. Had to run to the store for some bread and milk and could not pass the LQS. She was putting some fat quarters on sale for a buck a peice and I could not resist. The gal asked me what I was going to make (like I need an excuse to buy fabric) and told her I was shopping for a friend named Polly. I stocked up on several greens, browns, some deep reds, and other things for swap blocks and such.

Polly, I am collecting fabrics for the I-Spy swap so I can make I-Spy quilts for my little grandson and soon-to-arrive grand daughter. I wanted to make sure it was just the right fabric so I could answer the question "Why did you buy that?" I could say "'Cause Polly said so!"

I found the perfect fabric for these quilts and I will think of you when ever I look at them - alligators! Yep, I found 'gator fabric. Cute little fellers so they don't scare the babies, you understand. But you are now a part of their quilts and their fun!

What a great idea you had!

Don't you just hate it when they ask what you are going to do with it........fabric, quilt, whatever? Roll in it, I don't know.

I tell them I am making "wearing apparel" so they shouldn't charge me sales tax. Gives me more $ for more fabric!
