Happy dancing--QOV #3 done-done!

Well! Was beginning to wonder whether the binding would ever get finished. Did the same machine method I always use but must've been drinking my bathwater. Can't believe how many spots I didn't catch on the back. I actually prefer machine finishing for strength if I don't know how the quilt'll be used, but this one would HAD to have been faster by hand!

I think I'm in love with the Hobbs Poly-down. Such nice definition and It feels so supple! Anyone know how well it holds up? Haven't used wool in a while, but that's how I remember it. Now to practice enough not to regret using contrasting thread in places

First two pics in 2009 album...

I've used Hobbs Poly-down and it hand-quilts very nicely. It has stood up well in the quilts I've used it for. I do prefer the Hobbs Heirloom for most things. I'd rather sleep under cotton. I like the way it shrinks a bit and gets that puckery look after washing. I like the way a cotton (or mostly cotton) batting grabs a bit to the quilt top and backing for machine quilting.

Have you even tried sewing the binding to the back first, then topstitching it down on the front? You don't miss anything that way.

Glad to know it holds up, Julia. I love the puckery look, too, and was surprised and pleased that I got it on the QOV. But then, I don't prewash the fabric, so it's probably about some kind of differential. I'd been wondering whether it the fabric shrinking would make everything look kind of taut and smooth. As far as sleeping under, I'd probably do wool for those (and for any "special") quilts, but, in any case, I really only make lap and baby quilts. The lack of grab wasn't a problem on the frame, but I can imagine feeling like you're chasing it around with sit-down quilting.

Kathy, this is the first time I've had the problem. I think I was just in too much of a hurry. I baste with glue (a la Sharon Schamber), so my attention must've wandered during that process.

I have tried what you suggested and looked fine for baby quilts. But then I accidentally discovered the method I've been using (a small serpentine with 100-weight thread, from the front) that looks, if not as invisible as handstitching, pretty inconspicuous.
