In Eddie's quilt, it is the white part between ship and sea surface. A ship, when travelling at speed, creates a bow wave and a wake (water disturbance) from the stern half. On calm days, the wake can be seen long after the ship has gone - like those vapour trails left by aircraft in the sky. It i s unfortunate that exactly the same word is used for this and the gathering after a funeral? . In message , FiederEls in NL writes

Ok thanks Patti.. that was what i thought it meant.. and the 'gathering after a funeral' meaning i knew also.. You know sometimes these post subject line are very confusing to me..until i read the actual message Take for example the post from Julia called : My new throat plate.. (huh?? she got a plate in her throat??)then i open the post and it's about an sm.. can you see my confusion? lol Or Musicmakers post called : Can we, as a group, take action when a sm company is not a good one?? Then i have to remind myself a sm is a sewing machine and it makes sense..because i could not imagine Musicmaker complaining about the other meaning of sm on this NG. (sorry Musicmaker..please don't be offended..i mean well..) As you can see.. confusion is my middlename ! But it is also fun!

You should try Dutch, Patti That is much harder to learn.. but hey.. if i can.. so can you! ;-) English is not that hard at all, it is everywhere..Most people speak English, well at least in Holland they do...

I'd love to! one of our nearest neighbours. I love languages - I can manage French and a bit of German - I'd love to try Russian, too. . In message , FiederEls in NL writes

Ed, are you going to *tie* this masterpiece??? That article isn't a very good one..... you do NOT have to tie every two inches. It depends on the batting- some can be tied or quilted as far apart as 10-12 inches. And using yarn certainly isn't the only way to tie. Whoever wrote this article is sadly behind times. I think this is the way the pioneers did it. VBG

Hi Leslie

I found that article via google as I am not knowledgeable enough to explain stretching :-)).

Enough to say that I will present myself and said quilt to the weekly meeting of Selsey Quilters where I will be instructed to do as I am told ;-)). I have a photo of me being instructed on how to stretch my Red Sea Quilt somewhere.

Many thanks

This is a perfect quilt for a good machine quilter to do. You could get so much more detail into the pictures and actually feel the choppy water with meandering...please don't tie.

I think you should do it. Although men and women may like some of the same things, I'm sure they'll both look at all of the quilts at the show. The men will love yours, and the women will ask you questions on how you made them. The men may tarry longer to enjoy yours, but the women will still spend a good amount of time looking at the rest of the quilts in the show. I think you should oblige.

Sue agrees but we are not into machine quilting although she is going to do a short training session on it next month.

So short of coming to see you in Florida soon, it will have to be the usual manual labour. :-))

Oh Ed, Please don't tie this wonderful masterpiece! IMHO that would detract from it immensely. Gen

Hi Gen

Rest easy! :-)) It is going to be hand quilted like my Red Sea Quilt was. I was surprised by some of the effects I made, especially with regards to the desert and sea.

Thanks to you all for the most complimentary words. We await the stretching.

Hi Rose

Many thanks for that. That airplane is supposed to be a Eurofighter Typhoon which is going to be the next generation of seagoing fighter to replace the Sea Harrier. In the distance on the Daring bow is the projected new RN Carrier due in 2016??? Now I am thinking of it, I may quilt in the periscope of the new RN Astute Submarine but maybe better to do that as my next effort.
