How are you inspired?

Hi, still new here, but wanting some input from the group. A little background is probably needed here: I've worked on every presidential campaign since 1974. I stuffed envelopes for McGovern. My picture is on the back cover of Bill Clinton's autobiograpy. I gave up every day off I had in 2008 to work on the Obama campaign. Needless to say, politics is a HUGE part of my life.

Now, I don't know, or care, about your politics. This week is historic, for so many different reasons. My son is an officer in the US Navy, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, so I'll be able to attend the inaugural ceremonies (and possibly the Commander-in-Chief's Ball), and will be at as many events as possible this coming week. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event for me, and I'm so excited I can't stand it. It needs to be recognized. It needs to be recorded. It needs to be set down in history in the form of a quilt.

Now, I'm certain that this is not the first quilt thought of for this occasion, or even the first of hundreds, or thousands. But I'm drawing a blank. Sensory overload. Too many patriotic quilt blocks are running through my head right now, and that's not exactly what I want. I'm not sure exactly what I want, except for inspiration for a wallhanging. Maybe I'll get nothing here, but I'm trying. If you were me this coming week, what would you sew?????

How about a picture of the new president with the saying "Yes We Can"

Art quilt: collage type thing, maybe? Use patriotic colours in an abstract way rather than formal blocks... Or distort the block to give them a twist?

Ideas and images from the campaign...

Friend of mine made a very cool quilt by copying newspaper headlines/ photos onto fabric and setting them together with a simple sashing. Email me privately and I'll forward the photo if you want.

But for a project of my own... don't know. I usually remember big events by looking at whatever I was sewing (or knitting) as the event unfolded. If it really moved me, it becomes linked to the project.

Or maybe a really spectacular BaltimoreAlbum-style applique. You could use someth>Hi, still new here, but wanting some input from the group. A little

Hi As Obama is inspired by past presidents, particularly Lincoln, I would use maybe a Lincoln's Platform block. I would then choose my fabrics based on the feelings and mood of this week's events. I would then try to some how tie in through fabric or design or something of the future... maybe hopes, dreams, possiblities.... something maybe uniquely your own that you could "sew" into the quilt. Maybe that part could be somehow interpreted in the quilting design.

Well... that's what I would do. :) I'd love to see what you do!

Well, Mercury is retrograde. A really bad time to start new projects. (bad time to be inaugurated too actually) Timing is astrologically good to finish projects already started. That is what I am doing until the 31st. There hasn't been a politician anywhere that has inspired me in any way since Paul Tsongas. He's dead and I seemed to be the only one that liked him anyway. : (

Vicky,

Attend the inauguration activities. Look at everything, absorb everything you can. That's where you will find your inspiration! It is probably waiting for you somewhere in DC. Whether it is Obama and Lincoln surrounded by log cabin blocks, an art quilt about the jam- packed Metro, a particular person or a defining moment or word that happens. The magic will most likely appear in the midst of the chaos!

Let us know what you create!

Lots of luck, and please be careful!

Magic or misery? 'They say' there will be one Port-o-let for each 60,000 in the chaos. Polly

For inspiration, I'd look to the "whys" of why you wanted him elected. If it was for the good he'd do for the elderly, look online for moving photos of the elderly. If it was for the poor that he'd help, look for those images.

Since you seem to be very politically motivated for GOOD reasons (Lord knows so many here in Panama City Beach are for BAD reasons), then you'll see inspiration in the faces of the people and communities that he was elected to help.

Just my opinion.

When there is no place to 'go' it seems you need the facilities the most! Clearly the new administration is discriminatory against folks with ulcerative colitis and Crohns if those numbers are correct. I sure hope the numbers problem are wrong or fixed before next week. Taria

It's not a question of willingness, as I understand it; it's a question of availability. They've even asked construction projects in the DC area to "give up" their portapotties for a couple of days---which of course hasn't gotten much response, because it amounts to "please shut down, stop work and lose money for a couple of days so political hangers-on can pee."

Not something, especially in this economy, that they can afford to do.....so it becomes a question of how far away are you going to have to truck portapotties in from, and when does it become an economic impossibility? (The inauguration people *do* have a budget, y'know.....)

Yeah, but it's not infinite, and there are a lot of things coming out of that budget, and most of them are expensive.

It's astonishing how fast you can burn through that.
