my next project

DS is working on his MFA in sculpture. For his graduate show, he asked me if I could find 15-20 "old quilts". What?????? No! (However, being the ever helpful mother I did spend a few hours hitting the thrift shops.) But, being the ever helpful mother, I volunteered to piece a top and bottom for his project. Guess what the dimensions will be? 18' x20'....yes, that's feet! He wants it to look "rag tag" .... more unstructured than neat and accurate. Won't this be fun? Several years ago, I purged a whole bunch of old calicos from my stash. But I felt so guilty about it that I cut it all in half....and donated half while I kept half. I sent DH to the attic and then realized that after I had lived without that half for a couple years, I had donated that too!!! RATS! So, moral of the story....NEVER give away your stuff! LOL! So now I have put out a plea to my small group and guild members for any stuff they want to be rid of....double knits, decorator fabrics, etc. I think it won't be a big problem accumulating the yardage. I can always go to the thrift shops and look for draperies for more...as well as the sale bins at Hobby Lobby. Oh....what will he do with this? He's building a skeleton/like structure that will be covered with this "quilt". I think it's probably an homage to the fabric piles he's grown up with since I made my first quilt before he was born. I just hope it's not a statement about how fabric kept his mother from paying attention to him during his formative years!!!

How interesting! You will take pictures won't you--of both the quilt and the sculpture?
